Sunning and wear to the boards and spine; a few bumps to the edges and leading corners. Abrasions and wear to the spine label. The pages are rough cut with instances of foxing, tanning and creases throughout. The closing section of pages have chips and tears to the gutters, however the text remains unaffected. The binding is a little visible at points, otherwise remains sound throughout. CM. Good.

The only thing about this set that detracts greatly is paper tape (tan, dried, brittle, failing) along 4 of the 6 hinges (light brown endpapers). (Slight gutter pull, as well, between ffep and half-title of volume one). Small bookplate on each volume's front pastedown (James D. Gaff). (A google search found him to be a "General Medical Practioner, MD & CM of Glasgow University"). Tiny, yellow bookshop label to upper corner of front pastedown of volume one (partially torn off, but appears to be M. Ogle, Glasgow). Bumped corners and spine-ends, but not much general wear at all and mostly quite clean. Very Good.

A complete set in three volume in the original publisher's binding. The scarce first edition of 1837 of scientist William Whewell's attempt to systemise and map the development of sciences through times. This was his most well-known work, and was later published in two volumes. An important work exploring science from the early Greek philosophy to the comprehensive systems, and demonstrated generalisations which compose sciences such as Mechanics, Astronomy, and Chemistry. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally sound with some shelf wear and a slight edge wear; the cloth to the spine has slightly faded. With a minor tear to the cloth to the head of the spine of volume one, as well as a damp marking to the rear board of volume one. A minor loss to the title label of volume two. A small inscription by a previous owner to the title page of each volume. The hinges to the front board of volume one are slightly loose, otherwise the volumes are firmly bound. The pages are generally very bright and clean throughout with only a minor faint scattered spotting to the occasional leaf. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
