Externally, sound with rubbing and wear resulting in light loss to the extremities. Fraying to the head and tails of the spines. Fading to the spines. Splits in the cloth to the joints of volume one and four. Front joint tender to volume two with a split in the cloth across the spine. Joints starting but firm to volume four. Hinges starting but firm to all volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with spotting to the first and last few pages. A 2" closed tear to the front endpaper of volume two. A history and a description of the palatine counties of Lancaster and Chester, forming the north-western division of England from earliest ages to 1867, with an account of the rise and progress of manufactures and commerce, and civil and mechanical engineering in these districts. Written by the active promoter of liberal interests in Lancashire, Thomas Baines. A journalist and historian, Baines wrote valuable histories of northern areas including Liverpool, Lancashire and Yorkshire and his histories are characterised by fullness of detail. Illustrated, with a frontispiece, engraved title page and five plates to division I, six plates to division II, a frontispiece, engraved title page and four plates to division III, and eight plates to division IV. With eighteen full page plates of views, plans and technology taken from original drawings by H. Warren, with a series of seven engraved portraits. All illustrations have their original tissue guards. Collated, complete. A smart set, in the publisher's original binding. To this work, William Fairbairn has written an account on the progress of commerce and engineering in these areas. Fairbairn was an important engineer and shipbuilder in the nineteenth century. A nice, first edition set of this work. Uncommon in the original divisions. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with a little loss to the cloth at the head and tail of spines. Spines have faded and there is minor bumping to the extremities. Rear hinges to all volumes are tender. Front hinge to volume IV is strained but firm. Little loss to cloth at the front joint of volume II. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Heavy spotting to the first and last few pages, otherwise scattered spots. Very Good . Ill.: H Warren. Very Good .

An Account of the Construction of the Britannia and Conway Tubular Bridges with A Complete History of their Progress, from the conception of the original idea, to the conclusion of the elaborate experiments which determined the exact form and mode of construction ultimately adopted.
London, John Weale and Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1849. Fold-out frontis transverse section of Conway Bridge, xii, 291pp inc figs plus 19 fold-out plates. Plate number 9 is not present (as published) and not called for in text. 24x17, cloth, quarter bound in leather, glt lettering on spine. Front board previously loose now reattached with tape internally and externally, corners bumped, rubbing to edges and spine, some pages heavily foxed, all folding plans present and complete but with a number of creases and closed tears, well-used fair to good copy thus. Fairbairn was an important civil engineer who worked extensively with wrought iron. He also worked with Stephenson on the design of the Britannia Bridge over the Menai Strait, opened 1848. There was some controversy over Fairbairn's contribution to the bridge and he wrote this book to give his version of events. An important work in the history of civil engineering. Uncommon.

The first edition of this uncommon work in the publisher's original cloth binding. Sir William Fairbairn (1789-1874) was a Scottish civil engineer, structural engineer and shipbuilder. It was Fairbairn who conceived the idea of a box girder to cross the Menai Strait. He was also one of the first engineers to investigate into the failures of structures, including the collapse of textile mills and boiler explosions, and into metal fatigue in particular. In 1854 he became the third president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. In this volume, written partially by himself and completed and edited by William Pole, is an account of the life of Sir William Fairbairn. 44 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, though faded and marked to the spine, with light shelf wear to the extremities and to the head of the spine. Zudem hat er ein neues Persönlichkeitsmodell entwickelt, das Freuds Ich-Es-Über-Ich-Modell zu einem komplexen System erweitert, in dem auch die Objektbeziehungen und ihr intrapsychischer Niederschlag ihren Platz finden. Fairbairns Werk führte die Psychoanalyse dahin, das angeborene Bedürfnis des Kleinkindes nach Beziehung und Bindung als essentiell für die menschliche Entwicklung (und auch für die Therapie) anzusehen. Mit seiner Theorie der Objektbeziehungen liefert Fairbairn ein Modell der psychischen Struktur, basierend auf der Verinnerlichung und Modifikation von Erfahrungen mit den Eltern und anderen Personen von zentraler Wichtigkeit für ein Kleinkind.
