BOOTH, WILLIAM
In Darkest England, and the Way out (Classic Reprint)
black, Forgotten Books. 2012. (ISBN: 9781440067730). Paperback. Condition good. The progress ot The Salvation Army in its work amongst the poor and lost of many lands has compelled me to face the problems which are more or less hopefully considered in the following pages. The grim necessities of a huge Campaign carried on for many years against the evils which lie at the root of all the miseries of modern life, attacked in a thousand and one forms by a thousand and one lieutenants, have led me step by step to contemplate as a possible solution of at least some of those problems the Scheme of Social Selection and Salvation which I have here set forth. When but a mere child the degradation and helpless misery of the poor Stockingers of my native town, wandering gaunt and hunger-stricken through the streets droning out their melancholy ditties, crowding the Union or toiling like galley slaves on relief works for a bare subsistence, kindled in my heart yearnings to help the poor which have continued to this day and which have had a powerful influence on my whole life. At last I may be going to see my longings to help the workless realised. I think I am. The commiseration then awakened by the misery of this class has been an impelling force which has never ceased to make itself felt during forty years of active service in the salvation of men. BOOTH [William]
In Darkest England and the Way Out. WITH THE ORIGINAL DONATION SLIP
International Headquarters of the Salvation Army,, [1890]. 8vo., First Edition, with large folding coloured chart on japon as frontispiece, wanting [blank] front free endpaper; original black cloth, upper board and backstrip lettered in gilt, lemon endpapers, small mark on upper board else a remarkably well-preserved, bright, clean, crisp copy. With a copy of the original donation slip loosely inserted, and 6pp Salvation Army catalogue at end. William Booth founded the Salvation Army in 1878. In 1890, the same year that Stanley published 'In Darkest Africa', he published his most important work with deliberate irony. Here he analyses the causes of the pauperism and vice of the period and proposes a remedy by ten expedients. These include land settlement, emigration, rescue work among prostitutes and at the prison-gate, the poor man's bank, and the poor man's lawyer. Booth's powerful arguments were convincing, money was liberally subscribed and a large part of the scheme was carried through. Printing and the Mind of Man, 560.

General Booth [William Booth], In Darkest England and the Way out
General Booth [William Booth]
In Darkest England and the Way out
London, International Headquarters of the Salvation Army, 1890. Cloth. A smart copy of this work setting the foundation for the Salvation Army's modern social welfare approach. With a folding colour frontispiece. A detailed study in which Booth proposes a number of social reforms to improve the living conditions of the poor in Victorian England. Booth envisioned the creation of "City Colonies", "Farm Colonies" and "Over-Sea Colonies", each being "self-helping and self-sustaining communities" which would provide food, work, and shelter for the needy. The models outlined in this text set the foundation for the Salvation Army's modern social welfare approach. Dated from the British Library, advertisements, and contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Publishers advertisements to the rear. In the original black cloth binding.
