MERRILL, Horace Samuel, Bourbon Leader: Grover Cleveland and the Democratic Party
MERRILL, Horace Samuel
Bourbon Leader: Grover Cleveland and the Democratic Party
Boston, Little, Brown and Company, 1957. Hardcover. Edited by Oscar Handlin. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering/rules. viii, 224pp. Very good. Binding lightly edgeworn and spine gilt rather rubbed, else tight and internally fine. Attractive first edition of this volume in editor Handlin's "Library of American Biography" series -- and an interesting association copy, being that of Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), who folds down two page corners in which his grandfather, Cleveland's vice president Adlai E. Stevenson I, is mentioned. From library of yet another Adlai: Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81). Intriguing copy. .
