Robert Boyle, A Continuation of New Experiments
Robert Boyle
A Continuation of New Experiments
Oxford, Henry Hall, 1669. First edition. Unbound. A scarce, first edition copy of Robert Boyle"s first continuation of his important work on air and gasses. A scarce, first edition copy of Robert Boyle"s first continuation of his important work. Illustrated, with seven of eight plates.  Lacking plate III.  The plates depict the single barrelled air-pump Boyle and Hooke devised. Plate V demonstrates Boyle"s experiment of sucking water using his pump to the top of the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford. Boyle worked hard to devise improvements on Otto von Guericke"s air pump or vacuum chamber.  His end result was the "machina Boyleana" or "Pneumatical Engine" which was finished in 1659. His account of the work was in the first publication "New Experiments Physico-Mechanical".  This is a continuation from that original work. This continuation was written, as Boyle states to the preface, because he had "promis"d a Second part of it, or a large Appendix to itÂÂ-" ESTC reference no. R34411. Disbound. Externally, sound, with minor ships to the extremities. Internally, held by one cord only at page 6. Otherwise, the work is firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional ink inscriptions to the margins. Tidemarks to the base of all pages, heaviest to the first and last few pages, in addition to plates VI and VII most heavily. Lacking plate III. Occasional light scattered spots. Good Only . Boyle, Robert
A historical account of a strangely self-moving liquor.
London, The Royal Society, 1685. 4to (21.6 x 17.2 cm). Six pp. [numbered 1187-1192]. No wrappers. = A very rare original issue of this paper, taken from the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society for the year 1685 (so not from the later, abridged edition). Unbound, but contents fine, in a recent protective portfolio. Boyle was one of the early contributors to the famous Philosophical Transactions- the longest running scientific journal. Boyle's numerous contributions to the Transactions are sometimes referred to as his "work diaries". Early volumes, issues or articles from the first 25 years of the transactions are nowadays extremely hard to find.
