Sir Richard Colt Hoare
A Classical Tour Through Italy and Sicily; Tending to Illustrate Some Districts, Which Have Not Been Described by Mr Eustace, in His Classical Tour
London, J Mawman, 1819. Leather. The second edition of this account of a tour through Italy and Sicily by the English antiquarian, archaeologist and traveller, Sir Richard Colt Hoare. The second edition, published the same year as the first edition which appeared in one volume. With a map frontispiece to volume I. It is noted to the title page that this work is a descriptions of areas of Italy that 'have not been described by Mr Eustace, in his classical tour&apos. This refers to John Chetwode Eustace's 'Classical Tour' which obtained him sudden celebrity. To the verso of the half-title it is written that as Mr Eustace did not live to finish the supplementary volume 'so as to form a complete Work on the present and past state of Italy' this work was written. 'Sir Richard Colt Hoare has executed, and in such a manner as, it is hoped, will be at once acceptable to the public, and gratifying to the numerous friends of Mr Eustace, as a tribute of respect to his genius, and of affection to his memory,' With half-titles to both volumes. A smart two volume travelogue. In full morocco bindings, with gilt stamping to the boards. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the spines and extremities. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper, 'To R W Bill from his friends&apos. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright. Scattered spots to the first and last few pages, otherwise just the odd spots to pages. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .
