Stahr zwei Bände über Islamische Kunst, einerseits den von markus Hattsein und Peter Delius herausgegebenen Band "Islam Kunst und Architektur" (Könemann), andereseits den bei Benteli erschienen Band "Meisterschreiber", der sich mit zeitgenössischer arabischer Kalligraphie befasst.Islam. Beide Bände werden nach Stahr der islamischen Kunst im allgemeinen und der Kalligraphie, ihrer "Königsdisziplin" (wie Stahr sie nennt) auf hohem Niveau gerecht und bilden somit im deutschsprachigen Verlagsraum - nach Ansicht des Rezensenten - die Ausnahme. Über die Beschäftigung mit den beiden Bänden hinaus spekuliert der Rezensent über die Frage, wieso die islamische Kunst hierzulande kaum beachtet wird. Seine Vermutung ist, dass eine "Unpersönlichkeit" der Grund dafür ist, denn in der islamischen Kunst hat "der Künstler weder schöpferisch zu wirken noch sich selbst zu verwirklichen, sondern stets hinter seinem Werk zurückzustehen". Doch die westliche Sicht, dass hierbei ein individueller Ausdruck aussen vor bleibe, greift nach Stahrs Ansicht zu kurz. Am Beispiel der in "Meisterschreiber" 19 porträtierten Kalligraphen belegt der Rezensent, dass sie bei "aller Einordnung in die Tradition und Gemeinschaft zugleich Individualisten sind". Das belegt Stahr vor allem an der Schriftkunst von Hassan Massoudy. Als "prachtvolles Kaleidoskop islamischer Kunst" über die Jahrhunderte hinweg bezeichnet er den von Markus Hattstein und Peter Delius herausgegebenen Band "Islam. Kunst und Architektur", der neben einer facettenreichen, qualitativ hohen Auswahl von Abbildungen auch mit guten Texten aufwarte.
