Large 8vo. - Dust jacket slightly stained / browned & dam. along the extrimities.First edition of the authorized Dutch translation (translated by B.F. van Overdiep) of Otto Neurath's famous Modern Man in the Making, first published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1939. This work captures the state of the world in the 1930s and describes it using text and figurative illustrations. From 1925 onwards, Neurath and his team worked on a new visual language called Isotype (International System of Typographic Picture Education). At a time when the rise of new mass media made hitherto unthinkable amounts of information available, Neurath felt the need for a systematic visualization that explained facts, statistics and comparative figures in a simple way. The book can be seen as one of the most influential precursors of today's ubiquitous infographics. Its mission was to analyze the fundamental trends in the social, political and economic life of mankind. The book covers a range of contemporary societal issues, including mortality, health, employment, trade, education, mobility, migration, and demography. Modern Man in the Making demonstrates Neurath’s democratic drive to make knowledge understandable and accessible to all. It recalls the ability of graphic art to inform and create context rather than merely present aesthetic qualities. The book has inspired generations of designers and led to sometimes remarkable imitations and further developments.
