Wollmer 53. Inscribed on the ffe. and dated by "Augustine Birrell. Cambridge, May 17,1924. Birrell, was Chief Secretary of Ireland from 1907-1916 during the time of the Rising which he was not able to prevent and as a result, resigned and left politics forever. Birrell made his name as a literary essayist with Obiter Dicta (1884) and he continued writing and book collecting and as seen here collected Leslie Stephen. .

All edges gilt. No. 92 of a thousand limited edition copies of this edition printed for sale in Europe. Bookplate of Daniel Drew to the front paste downs. Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume I, and thirty-nine further plates by W. Small. Collated, complete. Henry Fielding was a popular English novelist of the eighteenth century, one of the founders of the traditional English novel alongside Samuel Richardson. Though important in the literary world, Fielding is also noted in the history of law enforcement, as he founded the Bow Street Runners, the first full-time police force in London. Tom Jones is probably Fielding's best known work, a comical picaresque Bildungsroman originally published in 1749; here illustrated by W. Small.This ten volume set includes many of his best known and most beloved works. Volumes I and II contain Leslie Stephen's biographical essay of Fielding and Tom Jones; Volume III contains Amelia; Volume IV contains Joseph Andrews and A Journey from this World to the Next; Volume V contains Jonathan Wild; Volume VI contains Fielding's essays and legal cases; Volume VII contains A Voyage to Lisbon, as well as his legal papers and poems; and Volumes VIII to X contain his dramatic works, including The Miser, The Temple Beau and The Grub Street Opera.
