Karl Mannheim (1893-1947) was een Hongaars-Duitse socioloog, die de grondlegger is van de kennissociologie. De oorspronkelijke versie van Het generatieprobleem voltooide hij in 1928. Over de vertaler: Hans Driessen is vertaler van onder andere Duitse filosofie. Eerder verschenen van hem vertalingen van Nietzsche, Sloterdijk en Schopenhauer. Book condition : as new. - Het gemak waarmee we over generaties praten, illustreert dat het een bruikbaar begrip is om maatschappelijke verschijnselen te duiden. Bij nadere beschouwing blijkt echter dat het in het dagelijks gebruik vooral aantrekkelijk is als we het losjes hanteren. Generaties kunnen tegenover elkaar staan, jonge generaties kunnen een maatschappij vernieuwen, en thuis kunnen we een generatiekloof ervaren. Karl Mannheim zag scherp hoe deze losse begripsopvatting verwarring veroorzaakte. In zijn essay Das Problem der Generationen (1927-'28) werkte hij daarom een nauwkeurig, gedifferentieerd generatiebegrip uit. In dezelfde tijd geboren zijn zegt op zich nog niet zoveel, aldus Mannheim. Pas als jongeren ook dezelfde culturele invloeden ondergaan, kan de ontwikkeling tot een maatschappelijke actieve 'generatieeenheid' werkelijk haar beslag krijgen. Voor dat laatste is het echter ook nodig dat bestaande culturele vormen door een versnelde maatschappelijke ontwikkeling zijn ontworteld. Anders gezegd: jongeren kunnen pas dan een eigen rol op het maatschappelijke toneel krijgen. Mannheims generatiebegrip heeft in de loop van de tijd vele auteurs en onderzoekers ge nspireerd, zowel in de geschiedwetenschap als in de sociale wetenschappen. Met de eerste Nederlandse vertaling, van de hand van Hans Driessen, kunnen nu alle generaties uit de eerste hand kennis nemen van zijn rijke gedachtegoed.
