Originally published in 1902 as Das Arabische Reich und sein Sturz, the first chapter describes the earlier years of Islam under the rule of the Prophet Muhammad and the four Rashidun Caliphs. The main part of the book describes the wars and secular and religious politics under the Umayyad Caliphs, based on numerous ancient sources.Julius Wellhausen (1844-1818) was a German orientalist who was famous for his studies on the composition of the Pentateuch and for his works on early Islamic history, of which The Arab Kingdom and its fall is the most important.Margaret Graham Weir (1865-1928) translated several books on Islamic history. She was married to Thomas Hunter Weir, who was lecturer in Arabic at the University of Glasgow.With University Library Durham bookplate on paste-down and library/deaccession stamps on title-page. Some undescoring in the introduction. Half-title and title-page with a restored tear, otherwise in very good condition.
