Judith Bassett and Judith Binney and Erik Olssen
The People And The Land: An Illustrated History Of New Zealand, 1820-1920
Bridget Williams Books 1990 Softcover, 352pp. Illustrated with paintings and photographs, it tells the story of two communities, Maori and Pakeha, over the years 1820-1920. While Maori and Pakeha shared many activities and pleasures - from community brass bands to the new trade union movement, from a day at the races to a yarn in the shearing shed - the two stories here show that they saw their mutual history through very different eyes. The People and the Land/Te Tangata me Te Whenua reveals conflicting understandings of the past, but makes possible too the bridging of such differences through knowledge. Together, text and images (many in full colour) create a stunning new presentation of New Zealand history. First published in 1990, The People and the Land/Te Tangata me Te Whenua is now reprinted for both general readers and students of New Zealand history. Large; Heavy. Spine a litte bumped top edge. Good.

Mihaia: the Prophet Rua Kenana And His Community At Maungapohatu
Bridget Williams Books 2011 Softcover, 256pp. Rua Kenana was an extraordinary prophetic leader from the Urewera. Resisting threats to expel the Tūhoe people from their ancestral lands, he established a remarkable community at Maungapohatu, identifying himself as the ‘Mīhaia’ or ‘Messiah’ for Tūhoe. Judith Binney, Gillian Chaplin and Craig Wallace researched the history of the community in the 1970s, working first with a collection of photographs that they took to the Urewera. Sharing these photographs with descendants of Rua and his followers, they found that ‘strangers opened their hearts to us, and shared their stories’. This biographical account focuses on a dramatic moment in Urewera history, one that incorporated a shocking episode in early twentieth-century New Zealand. The rich photographic record documents not only the police assault on the Maungapohatu community but also the lives of the people and Rua’s utopian vision. The prophet lived into the 1930s, a leader still working to support and sustain his followers. Described on publication as ‘an unparalleled record of a community through time’, this remarkable history has been in demand since first publication by Oxford University Press in 1979. (ISBN: 9781927131305). Mint.

Te Ao Hou: the New World 1820-1920
Bridget Williams Books , 2018 Paperback. Te Ao Hou: The New World takes up the increasingly complex history of Māori entwined with Pākehā newcomers from about 1830. As the new world unfolded, Māori independence was hotly contested; Māori held as tightly as they could to their authority over the land, while the Crown sought to loosen it. War broke out just as the numbers of Pākehā resident in the country began to equal those of tangata whenua. For Māori, the consequences were devastating, and the recovery was long, framed by rural poverty, population decline and the economic depression of the late nineteenth century. Drawn from the landmark publication, Tangata Whenua: An Illustrated History (2014), Te Ao Hou covers the Māori history of the nineteenth century. Large. (ISBN: 9781988533407). Mint.
