Joseph Butler
The Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed, to the Constitution and Course of Nature. To Which Are Added, Two Brief Dissertations: I. Of Personal Identity II. Of the Nature of Virtue.
London, Thomas Tegg, 1829. Leather. A collection of religious writings from English Anglican bishop and theologian Joseph Butler. The author's best known work during his lifetime. which remained the chief buttress of Christian argument against unbelief. In this work Butler argued that nature itself was full of mysteries and cruelties and so shared the same alleged defects as the Bible. Arguing on empiricist grounds that all knowledge of nature and human conduct is merely probable, Butler appealed to a series of patterns or analogies observable in nature and human affairs, which in his view make the chief teachings of Christianity likely. With additional essays on Personal Identity and the Nature of Virtue. Written by Joseph Butler, an English Anglican bishop, theologian, apologist, and philosopher. Bound by Neil, Glasgow. In the original half calf binding with green cloth boards. Externally, smart with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Class label sticker to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Library ink stamp to the title page and the odd page. Ink inscription to the title page with library bookplate to the front pastedown. Bound by Neil, Glasgow. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

Sermons By The Right Reverend Father In God Joseph Butler DCL Late Lord Bishop Of Durham
Oxford University Press, 1826, a new edition. Full calf, G+. xxxvi+500pp ( lacking the last page of text ), Ex Libris George Curry DD with his armorial bookplate, edges of the leather rubbed, rather a strong tobacco ( pipe ) aroma, upper hinge strengthened with gummed craft paper. ¶ Butler's 'Fifteen Sermons Preached at the Rolls Chapel' ( 1726 ), along with 'Six Sermons on Public Occasions' (1749). An influential collection, held in high regards in the late 18th & early 19th centuries. Joseph Butler [ 1692 - 1752 ], English Anglican bishop and philosopher. The earlier sermons try to reconcile ethical egoism and benevolence, laying out a view of moral psychology which is explored in the later sermons within particular cases (e.g., self-deception, forgiveness, resentment). William Hazlitt wrote : 'the Sermons (with the Preface to them) are in a fine vein of deep, matured reflection, a candid appeal to our observation of human nature, without pedantry and without bias'.
