John Evelyn; Geoffrey Keynes, Directions for the Gardiner at Says-Court But Which May Be of Use for Other Gardens
John Evelyn; Geoffrey Keynes
Directions for the Gardiner at Says-Court But Which May Be of Use for Other Gardens
London, Nonesuch Press, 1932. First edition. Paperback. A signed bright, limited edition copy of John Evelyn's advice to gardeners. Held in a custom slip-case. Geoffrey Keynes' copy, with his signature. First edition thus. Limited edition, numbered 73 of 625 copies printed. Signed by noted scholar, and the editor of this work, Geoffrey Keynes. Geoffrey Keynes' own copy from his library. The Nonesuch Press specialised in limited edition and private press. They were founded by Francis Meynell, his second wife Vera Mendel and their friend David Garnett. Their aspiration was for their publications to be aligned with the same aesthetic standards as the private press movement. They were unusual as they used a small Albion press to design the books, but had them printed by commercial printers. In doing so, books with the quality of a fine-press were produced, but available to a wider audience at lower prices. This work is an instructional manual on gardening. Evelyn wrote it with his own garden at Sayes Court in mind. He discusses fruit trees, kitchen gardens, evergreens, the caring of shrubs and many more plants. A bright copy of this work, which has been beautifully produced for the Nonesuch Press. In the publisher's original marbled paper binding. In original slipcase. Externally, very smart. Small dent to the rear joint. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Near Fine . Ill.: None. Near Fine .
