Pantelleria 22 Juin 1923, 21x27cm, deux pages sur un feuillet. Lettre autographe datée et signée de Jean-Baptiste Charcot dit le Commandant Charcot à en-tête du Pourquoi pas ? , 56 lignes écrites à l'encre bleue sur une page recto-verso, adressée à son ami Raymond Hovasse. Pliures inhérentes à l'envoi, l'encre de la lettre a pâli. Les conditions climatiques ont prolongé une croisière en Méditerranée qui ne devait durer initialement que 4 jours : ""Mais comme la caractérisation de cette croisière depuis que nous avons quitté la Provence est le coup de vent qui dure trois jours, puis 1 jour de calme et de nouveau 3 jours de vent, nous travaillons 1 jour et tachons de nous abriter qq. part pendant les 3 mauvais. Et cela peut durer longtemps ainsi."" L'explorateur trouve tout de même quelque intérêt à cette navigation perturbée et rendue difficile par les conditions climatiques : ""Par ailleurs notre tournée n'a pas manqué de charme, l'Orient en a toujours mais ce sale temps l'a empêché probablement d'être aussi fructueuse qu'elle aurait pu l'être, le temps parce qu'il va falloir songer au retour."" Ce voyage aura permis à Jean-Baptiste Charcot de mieux faire connaissance de son ami et de sa famille : ""J'ai été tout particulièrement enchanté d'avoir l'honneur et le plaisir d'être présenté à votre femme et de connaître vos gosses et d'entrer ainsi un peu dans votre vie familiale, j'ai été également très heureux de vous avoir pendant qq heures à bord de nouveau..."" qu'il souhaite encore faire naviguer si les divinités marines lui sont toujours favorables : ""... si le bateau reste jeune... si tous les maîtres de la mer me permettent de continuer."" Matha, and J. J. Rey.Misbound, with the facsimile title page from a different edition bound in. It seems to have been misbound when rebound. The facsimile title page states that this work was published by E. Flammarion in 1906, which was the first edition; however, as per the pagination, this edition is the 1911 Gauthier-Villars. This appears to be bound without the first vi leaves, and the final two leaves, however it is not clear if the last two leaves contained any text.From the library of Kenn Back; Back was a British meteorologist with the British Antarctic survey for many years. He spent eight winters in the Antarctic and is a descendent of Captain George Back. In addition, he served as base commander at Halley, Faraday and Rothera stations. His library collection was built over decades and highlights his love of polar exploration.Back's note pertaining to the curious edition of this work bound before the title page, written in Spanish. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart, with just a little wear to the extremities and joints. Front hinge is starting but remains firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with a couple of odd spots only. First page following the title page is age-toned with scattered spots. Appears to be bound without the first vi leaves, and the final two leaves. Pencil note to the title page. Prior owner's note bound before the title page. Pages uncut to the top edge. ¶ Erste Ausgabe in einem schönen, gepflegten Exempar. (Rückenprägung des Buchbinders "1907").- Bericht der ersten ausführlichen Erfoschung von Graham Land. Die erste Antarktis-Reise des französischen Wissenschaftlers und Polarforschers Jean-Baptiste Charcot (1867-1936) war ursprünglich zur Rettung der schwedischen Antarktis-Expedition von Otto Nordenskjöld gedacht, die jedoch von einem argentinischen Schiff gerettet wurde. So erforschte und kartierte Charcot mit seinen Leuten die Westküste des Graham-Landes (Antarktis). Von Feuerland aus erreichte er die Brabant- und Anvers-Inseln, entdeckte später auf der Wiencke-Insel einen der seltenen natürlichen Häfen in der Antarktis (Port Lockroy) und erforschte die Biscoe-Insel (Salentiny S. 81f). Am Schluss der Reise hatte die Expedition eine gewaltige Menge wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse gesammelt, die schliesslich 16 Bände füllten. Zur Forschungsreise gehörten u.a.: Joseph Jean Justine Rey (1873-1930), Meteorologe; Paul Pléneau (1869-1949), der die unzähligen Fotos der Reise aufnahm; Jean Turquet (1867-1945), Arzt und Naturforscher, der über 1200 botanische und zoologische Präparate mitbrachte und nach dem mehrere Arten Algen u.a. The extremely rare FIRST EDITION which reproduces lithographically the entire original manuscript of notes taken during these lectures by Charcot himself, Blin, and Holin, "being a transcription of Charcot's famous Tuesday morning clinical lectures." (Norman 451). Comprising of 26 individual lessons delivered between 1887 and 1888. A second edition, set in type, appeared in 1892, co-published with Babé but without the participation of Adrien Delahaye & Emile Lecrosnier. The eminent French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893), one of the greatest of all neurologists, created at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris the greatest neurological clinic of modern times. There, he delivered his renowned clinical lectures and demonstrations to postgraduate students and invited practitioners. He was a pioneer of psychotherapy and left many memorable descriptions of nervous disorders. An excellent idea of his work is gained by perusal of these lectures. It is said that Sigmund Freud owned a small lithographic reproduction of the famous painting "A Clinical Lesson at the Salpêtrière" by André Brouillet (1857-1914) which depicts Charcot delivering a lecture to a group of students, of whom many of them became later renowned physicians. Freud himself translated Charcot's work into German and added a preface. E-2 .
