London, John Murray, 1869. Cloth. A very smart, second edition copy of this work on the British fishing industry, fully illustrated. The personal copy of British zoologist Leonard Harrison Matthews. A fascinating and very comprehensive work on the British fishing industry in the mid eighteenth century. Including information on the classification of fish, fish economic commerce, the natural and economic history of the British fish industry, and more. The second edition of this work, written by James G. Bertram. Including forty-eight in-text illustrations and a frontispiece depicting the view of Wick Harbour during herring season. This was the personal copy of renowned British zoologist Leonard Harrison Matthews, who specialised in the research of marine mammals. He served as the scientific director of the Zoological Society of London from 1951 to 1966. This copy came from the library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire, the previous home of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (1902-1968). She was an English socialite and through her mother was the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. In the publisher's original green cloth binding, with gilt stamping to the front board and spine. Externally, very smart and bright, with just a small amount of bumping to the head and tail of spine and extremities, and minor shelf wear to the boards. Ink signature of Leonard Harrison Matthews to the half title page. Newspaper clippings and notes by Leonard Harrison Matthews adhered to the verso of page 519, as well as pages 1 to 4 of the publisher's catalogue to the rear. Internally, front hinge slightly tender, but very firm. Binding generally firm. A few spots to the first and last few pages, but otherwise pages generally bright and clean. Very Good Indeed . He afterwards taught in Dublin, Birmingham and Oxford, where after a period of religious doubts he returned to the Roman Cathoc Church.. The first edition of this work, a very scarce copy found in only two institutional libraries. A collection of sporting anecdotes collected and edited by 'Ellangowan', pseudonym of James Glass Bertram, concerning a great variety of sports. James Glass Bertram was a Scottish author, known as apprentice to Tait's Edinburgh Magazine. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, the boards soiled and marked, damp staining to the front board. Minor chipping to the head and tail of the spine, which is lightly darkened. Alan Thornton's bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally very clean throughout, only odd marking to the occasional leaf. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
