Landwehr, Emblem and Fablebooks, 179: De Vries, 18: Visser / Hoftijzer, Emblem Books in Leiden, item 171: Praz, pp. 307 - 308: Not in STC Princeton coll.: Coll. Landwehr [Auction Drouot April 1991, comp. item 31 [handcolored copy!]: Bibl. Belgica, vol. I, 711 - 712: The text by Coornhert presents a translation of 25 latin allegorical poems by Furmerius on the use and abuse of wealth and richness, an ode to Horace, and a humoristic - didactic poem on the beneficial influence of imprisonment, obviously composed by Coornhert during his own incarceration in the Hague [1567]. Bonger, 'Leven en werk van D.V. Coornhert (1978), i.l.c.: Bonger [e.a. ed.], Dirck Volkertszoon Coornhert, 'Dwars maar Recht', (Zutphen, Walburg pers, 1989) pp. 60 - 80, a chapter by M.F. Fresco, discussing Coornhert and Antiquity.: In Coornhert's 'Cicero' [ca 1625] translation we find his introduction 'De vertaelder totten Leser', in which he defends the Dutch translation and emphasizes the importance & the correct use of the mother tongue. In this respect Coornhert was very much 'anti intellectual' in that he aimed to break the persistent use of Latin by established groups of scholars. The 'ordinary man in the street' had a right to know about current problems and affairs and therefore Coornhert felt obligated to use the Dutch language and in such a way that it would be generally understood. On van Hogendorp, see NNBW vols. II and VII: A very good copy of this rare Coornhert item, the plates in less fresh impressions, but this is to be expected, seeing that the plates go back to printruns of 1575. There seems to be some doubt about the engraving having been done by Wierix, but the Bibliotheca Belgica is quite clear on this issue: 'Ce que le titre annonce au sujet de planches, qui seraient gravées par Coornhert lui mźme: met zyn eygen hand in 't koper gesneden, est une inexactitude, soit volontaire soit involontaire , de la part de l'čditeur: les planches sont encore celles de J.-H. Wierix, gravées pour l óuvrage de B. Fermerus, De Rerum Usu et Abusu, Antw., 1575.'(BB, p. 712, note]: On the engraver Wierix, see: Maucquoy - Hendricks, Les Estampes de Wierix [4 parts, KB BRussel], part 3.1, series 2289 - 2314 (under Bernardus Furmerus), pp. 482 - 484: Hollstein: Thieme Becker, vol. 35, pp. 537 - 538: Nagler, vol. 24, pp. 297 - 304: Benezit, vol. 10, p. 727:
