San Francisco, CA: The New Music Society of California, 1928. 1928. - Folio, 14 inches high by 10-1/2 inches wide. Softcover, bound in stapled green wraps, titled and decorated in black on the front cover. The edges of the covers are stained and lightly creased with a tiny piece out of the top corner of the front cover. There is a tiny tear to the top edge of the front cover and a couple to the front edge of the rear cover. 11 & [1] pages. The corners and edges of the pages are slightly creased and lightly stained and the top corner of the last leaf is slightly chipped. Good.

Laid in at the front is a rare "ERRATA" leaf to Carl Ruggles' "Men and Mountains" which had been published in the first issue (volume I, No. I) of "New Music". The errata leaf, printed on 10-1/4 inch high by 7 inch wide paper, contains 9 different corrections to the score which was originally published in that first issue.

First edition of the second issue of Henry Cowell's important periodical. Through "New Music" Cowell, an important composer himself, published scores by modern composers who would otherwise have little opportunity to see their works distributed through the mainstream.

"This issue contains Three Paeans for Piano by D. Rudhyar", preceded by an introduction by the composer: ".. The music I present is not based on scales and runs of notes, on melodic themes and the like, which belong to melodic instruments like for instance the flute and the violin, and which call for a different type of progressions, for the real archaic modes and their infinite gradations of tones. Rather it is founded on the building of resonances or complex harmonies which are like vital seed-tones germinating, sprouting into vast trees of harmonics. It deals with Energies, not with so-called Form.."

Born Daniel Chenneviere, the French-born American modernist composer Dane Rudhyar (1895-1985) was also an author and humanistic astrologer. Rudhyar was a pioneer of modern transpersonal astrology. Rudhyar graduated from the Sorbonne at the age of 16 and went on to attend the Paris Conservatoire. His philosophy, first influenced by Nietzsche and later by the Zen teacher Sasaki Roshi, permeated his work and led him to change his name. A 1917 performance of his work "Metachorie" by the New York Metropolitan Opera brought him to New York City. "Metachorie" was one of the first polytonal compositions performed in the United States. In addition to his compositions, Rudhyar authored several books on music: "Claude Debussy and His Work", "Dissonant Harmony", "Rebirth of Hindu Music", "The New Sense of Sound", and "The Magic of Tone and the Art of Music".
