Heyne, Christian Gottlieb
Albii Tibulli [Albius Tibullus] Carmina: Libri Tres Cum Libro Quarto Sulpiciae Et Aliorum
Leipzig , Ioannem Gottlob Feindium, 1798. Third Edition. Hardcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. The editor Christian Gottlieb Heyne was born in Saxony in 1729 and died in Prussia in 1812 and enjoyed a successful career as poet and translator, including of this compilation. This Latin language text comprises almost all of the works of Tibullus, the Roman poet and friend of Ovid and Horace, born in 54 B.C. and died in 19 B.C. This is the Third Edition of the work, and includes extensive commentary and a short biography provided by Heyne. Printed in Leipzig in 1798, bound wholly in vellum in octavo format, hand-sewn binding with vellum string showing through expertly at joints. Title in gilt on spine, tooled onto green blocked label. Sewn-in headbands, volume stands remarkably squarely on the shelf. Front decorated endpapers had become stuck together resulting in some loss at top thereof. A bit of soiling along top edges of first signature, some toning to text, else and withal clean, complete and still remarkably sturdily bound. xcii + 343 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
