London, John Murray, 1849. First edition. Leather. The first edition of this important account of excavations at Nineveh by Sir Austen Henry Layard. A collection of plates from this noted work. These plates were drawn during Layard's expedition to explore the ruins of Assyria. He had met Sir Stafford Canning in Constantinople in 1842 who then encouraged and assisted this 1845 expedition. The trip was in part sponsored by trustees of the British Museum. During this expedition Layard stayed in the neighbourhood of Mosul and carried out expeditions in Kuyunjik and Nimrud. This work was published to illustrated the antiquities described by Layard in the work 'Nineveh and Its Remains&apos. With 90/102 named plates to the contents (there is a plate 7a and a plate 95a included in the 102, the plates reach 100 on their numbering). Lacking plates 2, 13, 14, 17, 19, 30, 66, 70, 71, 77, 78, and 79. Second title page to part II. Descriptions to each of the plates at the start of the first volume. Neatly trimmed fragments of plates 66, 71, 30, 19, 17, 14, 13 loosely inserted in a pocket. to part II. The plates to these volumes are extremely bright. A smart example of this fascinating work. In half morocco bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, rubbed. Rubbing is heaviest to the joints and to the leather extremities. Heavy loss to the spines. Front board to part I is cocked. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spotting, heavier to the first and last few pages. Good . Ill.: Austen Henry Layard. Good .
