Preface: The letters printed in this volume were mainly written by Thomas Carlyle to his youngest sister, Mrs. Robert Hanning, who died in Toronto on the thirteenth day of December, 1897. Other members of the family are represented in the correspondence; there are a few letters - these perhaps the most interesting - from Carlyle to his mother; a few, also, from the mother to her oldest and to her youngest child.
