Martin is brought up by his grandfather and namesake who is a wealthy man convinced that everyone is after his money, so to this end he raises an orphan girl Mary, to look after him, and tells her that whilst he is alive she will be well cared for, but upon his death, she will be thrown onto the streets, thus giving her an incentive to keep him well. Chuzzlewit senior's plans go awry when young Martin and Mary fall in love. Part of the Collins Illustrated Pocket Classics series. Good.
