Scientific names have been brought up to date following, with few exceptions, those of Meyer de Schauensee; English names were selected with the help of Dr. Eugene Eisenmann. Dr. Koepcke has designed the book especially for use in the field; text has been reduced to a minimum and in some cases the author deviates from systematic arrangement of the species to facilitate comparison of birds that might be confused. Description cover size, plumage, song, posture, and habits are included. Notes on distribution, range, and habitate are included. Each species is illustrated by a scaled line-drawing by the author, reflecting her wide experience in field observation. The usefulness of this field guide, however, is not limited to the Department of Lima/ Many birds inhabiting the central and southern coasts of Peru, the western slopes of the Andes, and nearly all of the high Andean region can be readily recognized from the excellent illustrations.
