SALVADOR DE MADARIAGA - Victors, Beware

London England, Jonathan Cape, 1946. First Edition, Binding: Cloth, Very Good/Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo Hardback Hardback. First Edition. Victors, Beware. Pen mark to end inside back cover. Wear and tear to edges of D/J. This book is a re-statement of the principles and practices of liberalism, by a Spanish Liberal exciled in this country since 1937. It seeks to delve below mere words, and to probe the actual meaning of such verbal tokens as Democracy, Fascisim, Revolution, People, muched 'soiled in the usage'. The author believes that a community must be judged by the kind of men and women it breeds, and that the chief condition for a nation to be healthy is that its men and women are free. Freedom should come before prosperity, and even before security. But he thinks that it can only be secured within a framework of unity, and that therefore a wide grid of socialism, to harness a number of big services and industries to the general good, is indispensable to the political and economic health of an otherwise liberal nation.304 pp.
