JOHN RUSSELL - The Shell Book of Seamanship

England, David & Charles, 1979. First Edition, Binding: Cloth, Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0715378228 Hardback The first part of the book sets the scene: the arena of natural forces - the sea and the weather. The second part concerns the actors (ourselves) where management finds its most vital expression - in team-work and physical well-being, for example. In the final section John Russell deals with a number of subjects which he has chosen because he feels either that he can say something new about them, can view them from a different angle, or that they show signs of becoming negleted. These include handling ropes, compass error, coping with traffic and seamanship in harbour. But the theme of the book is introduced in the first chapter of all - an account, founded on fact as well as imagination, of how early Man first put to sea and how one of them (by using his pound of 'slush') learned practical seamanship.Illustrated.
