JAMES E. THOROLD ROGERS - Six Centuries of Work and Wages. The History of English LabourLondon England, George Allen & Unwin, 1949. Reprint, Binding: Cloth, Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Hardback Six Cenuries of Work and Wages was first published in 1884 in the same year as Arnold Toynbee's Industrial Revolution; and for a whole generation these two books enjoyed a steady popularity. When I first began to teach for the Workers' Educational Association in 1912, they still held the field among working-class students of economics and social history, and were shaping current ideas of social history. Since then, there has been a vast amount of further research; and there are a great many points on which the conclusions of both books can be challenged, though not, I think, fundamentally enough to upset the general impression which they convey.
