MELVYN BRAGG - Speak for England. An Essay on England: 1900-1975 Based on Interviews with Inhabitants of Wigton, Cumberland

London England, Book Club Associates, 1976. First BCA Edition, Binding: Boards, Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Hardback At the turn of the century Wigton in Cumberland was a smallish town, largely in part agriculatural, in part industrial. Today it occupies much the same area, but in other ways it has greatly changed. This book is told in a wide variety of interviews with people of all ages and stations in life - interviews made the more convincing and often poignant by the fact that Melvyn Bragg was born and bred in the town. In this panoramic book Melvyn Bragg covers every aspect of English life. The people speak for themselves, and his pages are peopled with miners, farmers, dog breeders, pigeon fanciers, councillors, school teachers, factory workers, housewives and shopkeepers. They come wonderfully to life and the author maintains that for all our present difficulties there remains in Wigton, as in all England, a reserve of energy that bodes well for the future. Illustrated with B/W photos. Slight mark on inside page from removal of sticker. Some shelf wear to D/J.(We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
