Weidenfeld & Nicholson 1981 first VG/VG edgewear 188pp 8 pages B & W photos 3 maps 8 x 6 405g ¶ This is the story of the first English settlement in America, the brilliant concept of Sir Walter Ralejk. The first English settlement in 1585 landed on Roanoke Island, in what it now North Carolina, it was not a success, and the second colony of 115 people in 1587 disappeared without trace. Later rumours filtered through that the settlers had been massacred by hostile Indians. Some of them may have escpaed and today, the Lumbee Indians claim to descent from those survivors. This is an account of those years.
