A selection of Meyer Berger's eminently humane stories that appeared in his New York Times column, About New York, between 1953 and 1959, the year of his death. Said to have been one of the ten best American journalists of the twentieth century, Berger was born on the Lower East Side in 1898 and came up the hard way. His column about interesting people and little known corners of New York ran from 1939 to 1959 and was much loved. He won the Pulitzer Prize for one of his stories and the Columbia University School of Journalism still awards the Meyer Berger Prize each year to the city journalist who most exemplifies Berger's spirit of integrity, curiosity and loyalty to truth. Tall 8vo/23.5cm. Grey cloth, negligible wear, in lightly edgeworn, lightly soiled dj, internally fine. A lively account of New York City in the "Gaslight Era" which can probably be defined as the last two decades of the 19th century. Probably more than two hundred images from the premium photographic collections of New York City, i.e. the Museum of the City of New York, the New York Public Library, Brown Brothers, The New-York Historical Society and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in addition to the author's collection. Maxwell F. Marcuse (ca.1880-1970?), besides being a Gotham 'booster' extraordinaire, was a prominent businessman and educator, being the founder in 1939 of the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising, now a 4-year degree granting institution known as the LIM College with its presidency now in the hands of his grand-daughter, the third generation of his family to hold that position. Mr. Marcuse also wrote, Tin Pan Alley in Gaslight: A Saga of the Songs that Made the Gray Nineties Gay (1959). He was a Member of the New York City Board of Higher Education and a Trustee of City College. Scholarships at several institutions are named in his honor. Fine.

McClellan (1865-1940) son of the famous Civil War general and presidential candidate, was Mayor of the City from 1904 to 1909 and presided over monumental changes to the City's landscape including the opening of the IRT Subway, the construction of the Chelsea Piers, the building of the Municipal Building and other still current landmarks. He also conducted a vendetta against the new motion picture theatres. Scarce to rare. Very Good.
