DENYS, DR. F. WARD. PREFACE BY MITCHELL CARROLL
Our Summer in the Vale of Kashmir
Washington D C, James William Bryan Press. 1915. Hardcover. Book, First Edition. 233pp, colored fronti illustration, more than fifty text illustrations from photographs and artwork, some colored, including from 4 paintings by Col. H.H. Hart--each with a tissue protector), Preface by Mitchell Carroll. 4to/27cm. Decorated red cloth gilt, edgeworn at extremities, gilt dull, hinge papers cracked, internally clean. Good. A rather grand travel book to one of the more exotic areas of the East, perhaps the first by an American. The Reverend Frederick Ward Denys (c.1854- ) was an Episcopal Minister who is commemorated with the statue of a recumbent figure by the prominent American sculptor James Earle Fraser in Washington Cathedral, Washington D.C. Mitchell Carroll appears to have been the Managing Editor of Art and Archeology, the organ of the Archeological Institute of America, a journal in which at least one article on Kashmir by Rev. Denys appeared. Col. H.H. Hart was with the Royal Engineers of the British Indian Army. The James William Bryan Press appears to have been a small press which existed in the Washington DC area from about 1915 until the early 1920s. Dogra p.203. Good.

DOGRA, RAMESH CHANDER
Jammu and Kashmir: a Select and Annotated Bibliography of Manuscripts, Books and Articles Together with a Survey of Its History, Languages and Literature from Rajatarangini to Modern Times
Delhi, Ajanta Publications. 1986. (ISBN: 812020140X) Hardcover. Book, First Edition. viii, 417pp, Introduction, Bibliographical Essay, Bibliography, Notes, Author and Subject Index. 8vo/22.5cm. Black cloth gilt in dj. NF/NF. With the bibliographical essay, this reference book is one of the more substantive bibliographies on Kashmir. At the time of writing, the author was a South Asian specialist librarian in the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. One slightly puzzling point is why there is no mention of the 1974 work of Kulbhushan Warikoo, i.e. Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh: A Classified and Comprehensive Bibliography with a Foreword by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. A large and sustantial work, if perhaps not as substantive as Dogra's, it was certainly worth mentioning. Warikoo has since written more than a dozen books, primarily on Kashmir, and was Chief Librarian of the J & K State Library in the seventies and more recently has been connected with the Himalayan Research and Cultural Foundation. NEVE, ARTHUR. REVISED BY DR. E.F. NEVE
Tourist's Guide to Kashmir, Ladakh, Skardu, Etc
Lahore, Civil & Military Gazette, Ltd. 0. Hardcover. Book, n.d. [1930s or '40s?]. Imprinted as the "18th edition". [ii], vii, [i], ix, 192pp, Index, Introduction, The Kashmir Tourist, How to Travel, Routes to the Valley, The Great Waterway of Kashmir, Srinagar and Its Environs, Gulmarg and the Panjal Ranges, Eastern Kashmir, Sind Valley Tour, The Temples of Kashmir, Ladakh, Baltistan, Appendix 1--Rules for Visitors to Kashmir; App. 2--List of Routes; App. 3--Moghul Gardens in Kashmir; App.4--Shooting and Fishing Rules and Game Sanctuaries, folding colored map. 12mo/18.5cm. Red cloth with black lettering, internally fine. NF/NF. Major Arthur Neve (1858-1919) was Surgeon to the Kashmir Medical Mission. His brother, Dr. Ernest Frederic Neve (1861- ) was also a long-time medical missionary in Kashmir. Both were veteran trekkers who wrote about both their trips and Kashmir generally. This guidebook, started by the one in the late 1880s and carried on by the other probably until his death (date unknown), and from then on till about 1945 by The Civil & Military Gazette establishment. The C&MG apparently had or inherited the copyright or publishing rights. Though undated, from internal evidence the composition of this edition dates to about 1945/46 though it may not have been printed then? The key to its printing lies in the dates the 2 C&MG staff people mentioned, i.e. E.G. Tilt who wrote the Preface and P. Heal who is listed as Manager of the C. & M.G, Ltd. were employed by the C&MG. For some reason no copies of it are held by The British Library, Library of Congress, NYPL or any of the academic libraries of OCLC. It is by far the longest running guidebook to Kashmir. Allan, Dogra, Warikoo and Yakushi all mention earlier editions. Fine.
