A House Divided was the final volume of the trilogy that had begun with The Good Earth and continued with Sons. A chronicle of the third generation of the Wang family(of the Good Earth) it extended the author's inquiry into China's civil wars and the consequences of national turmoil for individual men and women. The critics were kind to it and Malcolm Cowley compared it to Malraux's, Man's Fate. Pearl Sydenstricker Comfort Buck (1892-1973) was the daughter of American missionary parents in China. In 1938 she became the first female Nobel Laureate for her literary work up to that time. She married Richard Walsh, President of the John Day Company, which published much of her work thereafter.
