Rare first edition of this early work, from the library of famous Dutch publisher Theo Sontrop, with on first free endpaper sticker from equally famous literary agent Hein Kohn - Internationaal Literatuur Bureau Hilversum. Sontrop was the first Dutch publisher of Bernhard and seven major works of Bernhard (Frost, Amras, Alte Meister, Das Kalkwerk etc) were published between 1977 and 1991 by his firm De Arbeiderspers. Kohn fled Germany in 1933 and started his agency in 1951. It was continued by his son Menno and currently by his granddaughter Linda. ILB is still the most important link between Dutch and German publishing worlds. With Zeichnungen by Anton Lehmden. Dustwrapper intact, but, with some slight imperfections, and two small tears (2 cm) at the edges of the bottom of front cover.

Wie zijn ziel wenst te laven aan de eeuwig-jonge poëtische oerkracht van de Bijbel, grijpe eerder naar deze magnifieke vertaling in het Duits van het Oude Testament van van de hand van de joodse denkers Martin Buber en Franz Rosenzweig, dan naar de tot geur- en smaakloos praatkringproza verplatte meest recente Nederlandse groepsvertaling, waaruit elk pregnant statenbijbelesk woord als 'zotteklap' meedogenloos is geweerd, kennelijk om de digitaal verpapte en verweekte moderne minibreintjes zo min mogelijk te belasten. De eerste twee delen nog met enigszins gehavend stofomslag, de laatste twee zonder. Het binnenwerk telt ruim tweeduizend bladzijden op het onvolprezen bijbeldundruk. Scharnier van het vierde deel ligt iets bloot.
