¶ There is an inscription, in pencil, on the last blank preliminary page before the title page. It reads: "M. H. Gray - This book was sent by W. G. to Thornhill to be read by J. H. G. Only 50 pages were read to him on the evening of Dec. 11th, 1901 - he had much wanted to read it & enjoyed what he heard. The book was afterwards given to Mr. H. G. by W. G." At the conclusion of chapter VI (p. 54) there is a pencil note in the same hand: "Read to J. H. G. on the evening of 11th Dec. 1901 - 'Now I've read you 50 pages & I'll read you 100 tomorrow'. 'Thank thee dear, thou art very kind.'" These inscriptions could be erased, but they are rather charming, and add to the character and distinctiveness of this copy.
