ADMIRAL ARLEIGH (31-KNOT) BURKE The Story of a Fighting Sailor
, Bantam Books 1985, . Ill.: black-&-white illustrations. Mass market paperback format in Bantam War Book series. pp. viii, 270. First published in 1962 by Chilton Books, this is the first printing of this title in this series. ISBN 0553249843
¶ "In 'this man's Navy', one commander stood out among the brave company - a matchless combat leader, a shrewd strategist, a master at sensing the most dangerous battle zones and then propelling himself into the heat. He was Arleigh '31-knot' Burke, one of the most decorated officers of the Pacific Theatre in World War II and Korea." This copy inscribed on preliminary page to Muriel and Gordon McLintcok "with all very best wishes possible" and signed "Arleigh Burke". Tabbed on to the inside front cover is a typed personal letter, signed by Burke, addressed to Admiral McLintock, in which he praises his wife's cooking, observing: "I can understand having a beautiful wife but I can not [sic] understand how any man, even a sailor, could be so fortunate as to have found a beautiful cook." Adm. McLintock was the retired Superintendant of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, NY. Books signed by Adm. Burke are relatively scarce, making this an exceptional item containing, as it does, this personal letter also signed by the admiral. Burke died in 1996. Being a 30-year-old mass market paperback it is not suprising that the stiff illustrated covers are creased, and that there is a small tear at the base of the spine and a small stain on the foredge of the text block. Otherwise, the book is still in good condition.

¶ In January and March of 1992, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation aired a three-part "documentary" entitled "The Valour and the Horror" which was said to recount three elements of Canada's participation in World War Two. The second episode, entitled "Death by Moonlight: Bomber Command", set off a firestorm of protest by veterans and historians over what they viewed as the CBC's biased and unfair description of events relating to the Allied bombing of Germany. A class action was brought on behalf of the veterans, against the CBC, and its co-producers. This book sets out the plaintiffs' Statement of Claim, and provides additional background information.

A COLLECTION OF POST WORLD WAR TWO PAMPHLETS ON RE-INTEGRATING DEMOBILIZED MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES INTO CIVILIAN LIFE
, [Various publishers] 1944 and 1945, .
¶ Given the increasing concern with returning members of the military suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), these pamphlets - although referring to conditions during the Second World War - contain interesting information and advice, if not up-to-date techniques to deal with PTSD. To quote the subtitle of one of the pamphlets, they are "prepared to inform members of the Armed Forces and Canadians generally of steps taken for civilian rehabilitation of those in uniform". All but two were published for Canadian soldiers. Titles include (year of publication in parentheses): (1) After Victory in Europe (1945) (2) Back to Civil Life (three copies: one is a second edition, published 1944; the other two are third editions, published 1946) (3) The Common Sense of Re-Establishment (1945) (4) The Machinery of Re-Establishment (1945) (5) Vocational Training on Civvy Street (ND c. 1945) (6) What About Job Preferences? INSTRUCTION SHEET M18A1 ANTIPERSONNEL MINE
, , . Ill.: black-&-white illustrations. No date of printing is indicated but, judging by the devices being used, it may have been printed in the 1950s or 1960s.
¶ This is a folded 10" x 16" "oil cloth" type printed sheet of instructions. The printing is on one side only, and shows five steps (with details and illustrations). Step 1 - Where to Position Mine; Step 2 - How to Aim Mine; Step 3 - How to Arm Mine; Step 4 - How to Test Circuit; Step 5 - How to Fire Mine. This sheet DOES NOT tell you how to manufacture a mine. It appears that this sheet was issued with the pre-manufactured mine. The figures in the illustrations appear to be military personnel. We purchased this item from a local ephemera dealer, mixed in with a lot of unrelated material.

MENU 91N2 GRADUATION DINNER [together with] GRADUATION DINNER No. 2 A.O.S. [a lot of four graduation dinner programs for 1944]
Edmonton, AB, 1944, . Ill.: black-and-white photographs. Stiff card covers show light wear, else each in very good cond.
¶ The first two programs are printed on stiff card, folded once (i.e. to four pags). Both are dated May 2, 1944. The first, on blue card, is printed on the front "91N1 Graduation Dinner / Macdonald Hotel / Edmonton.Alberta.Canada" The meaning of "91N1" is not clear but, given the depiction on the front cover of a kangaroo hopping over a map showing Australia, Canada, and England, one may presume that it is either a course taught in Edmonton to Australian pilots or navigators, or it is an Australian regiment. The second card is a bit smaller, and is on stiff white card, with blue printing and reads: "Menu 91N2 Graduation Dinner" and then the same date and location. It depicts a "hitchhiking" man in uniform between two direction signs, one indicating "2 A.O.S." (Air Observers School), and the other "O.T.U. 6000 mls". Both programs have numerous autographs on the last page (back) of each folder. In addition, the blue program has neatly tabbed in on the third page a photograph of the graduates with their names printed below. The other two programs are dated June 13, 1944, and read: "Graduation Dinner / Course 94 / No. 2 A.O.S. / R.A.A. / R.A.F. / R.C.A.F." and are identical except for the names hand-written on the bottom right corner. Both have similar photos, with the subjects identified, but both photos are of different people. Neither of these programs have autographs. Note: it is known that, during the Second World War, there was a military aviation school in Alberta, called Blatchford Field, which trained Commonwealth navigators.

SECOND CONTINGENT Military District No. 10 1915
Winnipeg, MB, Gordon R. Gibbons 1915, 1st printing, wrappers. Ill.: black-and-white photographs. Small folio, Issued "In commemoration of the Second Regiment going to the front from Military District No. 10, Canada 1915."
¶ No author is credited, but it was probably Gordon Gibbons, who was also the publisher. See Peel (3d) 4128. The Introduction bears a facsimile signature (i.e., signed in the plate) by Winnipeg mayor R. D. Waugh. This is an unpaginated record of all the enlisted men, and officers, of the contingent, mainly from Winnipeg, who were sent overseas to "fight the Hun" in 1915. Following the Introduction is a photograph of Sir Sam Steele, "Major-General commanding 2nd Canadian Expeditionary Force". A facsimile of his signature appears under his portrait. WorldCat suggests Gibbons is the author and locates only four copies of the actual publication in institutional libraries (there are also five microfiche holdings). The last 24 pages of the book contain an acknowledgement of all the commercial supporters of the publication, as well as many illustrated advertisements, including a full-page ad for Eaton's Department Store, with a magnificant photo of its flagship Winnipeg store, which had just opened. The embossed and printed stiff card covers have, as one might expect after 100 years, separated from the stapled text block. They are a bit worn and soiled, but still in good condition and quite presentable. The contents are quite intact, unmarked and in very good condition. This is an exceptionally scarce item, and particularly valuable for military or genealogical researchers given that there are photos, names and ranks for each member of the contingent. This small folio measures 31.5 x 23.5 cm. Referenced in Cooke, "Canadian Military Experience" (bibliography), p. 207.
