A scarce title, as WoorldCat lists only eight copies in either public, or academic, libraries. The endpapers are marbled to match the foredges. Bookplate of Ella Lynette Somerville on front pastedown. Wear to board edges, and corners a bit rounded. Light soiling to boards. Contents very clean. Hinges and joints tight. ¶ Contains first and second series of portraits - forty in all. Subjects include Disraeli, Major-General Sir Garnet Wolsely, Thomas Carlyle, The Earl of Dufferin, W. H. Smith, Tennyson, Hon. Alexander MacKenzie, Sir John A. MacDonald etc. Buckram scuffed and wrinkled to rear board. Leather rubbed at extremities. front hinge cracked but holding. First few pages and one portrait (Gladstone) stained. Occasional marginal smudging thoughout, but really quite minor. Overall, in good condition.

Slight dent to top edge of front board, slightest rubbing to extreme corner tips of boards. Contents clean and unmarked. Binding slightly stressed between pp. 132-133 - the book may have been pressed flat. Otherwise, in very good to near fine condition. The dust wrapper is slightly chipped at top and bottom of folds. Front flap has been diagonally clipped at bottom. Slight blue smudge (thumbnail size) to front panel. Perhaps a trifle soiled; else in very good condition.

¶ No authors are identified, nor is a date of publication given, but Turner, "The Walter Scott Publishing Company, A Bibliography", 436.a, identifies the authors and suggests a publishing date of 1892. The cloth is very stained, soiled, and rubbed. The endpapers are also soiled, but they are not split and the hinges are tight. Someone has done a little coloring to the frontispiece. The contents show the odd spot of foxing, but are otherwise quite clean.

This engraving appeared as the frontispiece to volume I of "The Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow", published in 1880 by Houghton, Mifflin.

A STEEL ENGRAVING OF THE 31st FIRST MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY
, ND (c. 1850), . Ill.: steel engraving. Right margin a trifle wrinkled, and sl. age-toning to margins. The engraving measures 22 x 14 cms. The oval image measures 11 x 9 cms. Facsimile of Heathcote's signature just below image.
¶ Heathcote (1665-1721) served as the 31st mayor of New York City from 1711 to 1713. A marble statute of Heathcote stands atop the old Hall of Records at 31 Chambers Street in Manhattan. An armorial crest appears above the facsimile signature. Just below the signature it is stated: "From the Original Painting in possession of the Rt. Rev. W. H. DeLancey Bishop of Western N.Y.". The engraving is impressed on heavy unwatermarked paper (similar to arches paper), and the engraver is identified as V. Balch. This engraving originally appeared in the book "The Documentary History of the State of New York", published by Weed, Parsons & Co.

, ND (c. 1850), . Ill.: steel engraving. A trifle age-toned at the margins, one corner slightly wrinkled. The engraving measures 22 x 14 cms. The oval image measures 8 x 6 cms. Facsimile of Cadwallader's signature just below image.
¶ Colden (1688-1776) was a physician, natural scientest and lieutenant-governor for the Province of New York (i.e. New York State). He served as the first Colonial representative to the Iroquois Confederacy, an experience that resulted in his writing "The History of the Five Indian Nations (published 1777), the first book on the subject. An armorial crest appears above the facsimile signature. The engraving is impressed on heavy unwatermarked paper (similar to arches paper), and the engraver is identified as V. Balch & Co. This engraving originally appeared in the book "The Documentary History of the State of New York", published by Weed, Parsons & Co.

¶ 3/4 green leather over buckram, marbled edges & endpapers, raised bands and gilt-stamping on spine, red leather spine label. Spine is a bit cocked, edges rubbed, some peeling to corners, small water-stain to the spine & rear board at the joint. Ex-library, with a bookplate on the front pastedown & several stamps on 2nd ffep, title page & final page. Hinges are split but stitching is still tight. One plate is loose but present. The ffep & 2nd ffep are creased & have 1/2 inch tears at the fore-edge about half way up. The frontispiece is attached by only its top half, the bottom half having come away from the title page to which it had been affixed.

¶ "The author..presents here an attempt at an all-round view of the Kaiser which shall enable an ordinary reader at least to understand the man who could have declared for peace and ensured it, but who in a fateful hour decreed war.." Published just after the outbreak of World War One, this is the second impression of the first edition, published one month later (November, 1914). The author, Ernest Charles Buley (1869-1933) was an Australian writer who asked to have this work published anonymously, so as to not upset his German relatives.
