ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR PAINTING OF A WESTLAND LYSANDER AIRCRAFT
, , . Unframed. Measures 28 x 38 cm.
¶ The Westland Lysander was a British army co-operation and liason aircraft produced by Westland Aircraft which was used immediately before and during the Second World War. After becoming obsolete in the army co-operation role, the aircraft's exceptional short-field performance enabled clandestine missions using small unprepared airstrips behind enemy lines to place or recover agents, particularly in occupied France with the help of the French Resistance. Like other British army air co-operation aircraft, it was given the name of a mythical or legendary leader, in this case the Spartan general Lysander (from Wikipedia). Our painting shows the Lysander, bearing the RAF roundel on its fuselage, flying from right to left, the perspective from just under the port wing looking upwards to a blue sky with a few clouds. It is skillfully done by the artist, who has signed the painting in the lower right corner. The first name is "William" but the last name is difficult to discern: it looks like it begins with "Mow" and could be "Mowley", but we cannot say this with any degree of confidence. The reverse side of the painting is blank. There is a small closed tear to the right of the painting and a bit of soiling to the blank margins, else the painting is clean, brightly-coloured, and in very good condition.
