London, Methuen, 1899. A very nice tight, clean copy of this first edition. Original green cloth stamped in gilt and blind, 253pp. 39pp Methuen catalogue. Spine ends rubbed else very good. The author (1863 - 1928) was editor of the Northern Counties Magazine, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In the early 1900s he bought the Tower at Otterburn Castle. Described as a "wealthy antiquary" he carried out extensions, mainly to the rear of the property and built the lodge at the gates. Hardcover.

Used; Very Good Dobrynya Nikitich is one of the most popular bogatyrs (epic knights) from the Rus' folklore based on a real warlord named Dobrynya. This story of Dobrynya and the dragon starts with Dobrynya's mother telling Dobryana to avoid the Saracen Mountains, to not trample on baby dragons, to not rescue Russian captives, and to not bathe in the Puchai River. Dobrynya disobeyed his mother and did all four things. Paperback.

Cloth-backed colour Yaguzhinsky illustrated boards, 19 x 22 cm. 54+12+31+16 pp. decorated end-papers, gilt decorated chromolithograph illustrations by Bartram throughout. Four of Pushkin's stories bound together. Owner inscription to front end-paper (Lola Lubenec from her aunt), Viktor Gutmann's (Oerlikon) neat stamp to title. In good condition, complete. Slightly shaken, inner joint cracked, contemporary owner inscription to f.e.p. Minor signs of age and use. Clean. Boards illustrated by Sergey Yaguzhinsky, poster artist and in-house illustrator for publisher Sytin. Illustrated inside by Nikolai Bartram and reminiscent of Bilibin. Bartram is now best remembered as an avid collector and expert on children's toys. The present volume is published by the legendary Ivan Sytin, prolific publisher and, amongst much else, famous for children's books. These stories were first published separately and this is a very rare example of the collected edition with the Yaguzhinsky cover.

Landscape format, colour illustrated card covers, unpaginated, c. 40 pp. illustrated throughout by Radlov in colour. Upper cover chipped at spine and lower edge, internally clean and tight. No tears, no scribbles. Translated from the Russian 'Rasskazi v kartinkakh' by Dorian Rottenberg. Nikolai Radlov (1889 - 1942), prominent Russian artist and critic was particularly known for his satirical graphic art. These award-winning, much loved picture stories were co-written with Daniil Harms Kharms [Yuvachev or Yuvachyov], 'avant-gardist' and 'Absurdist' poet. .

Fantasy originally written in 1841 by John Ruskin for the twelve-year-old Effie Gray, whom Ruskin later married. It was published in book form in 1851, and became an early Victorian classic which sold out three editions .
