[SCHILLING, VON CANSTADT, PAUL LUDWIG (ED.)]:
.... Btschom-ldan-adas-ma-sches-rab-kyi-pha-rol-tu-phyin-pai-sning-po. Das Herz (die Quintessenz) der zum jenseitigen Ufer des Wissens gelangten Alleherrlichst-Vollendenten. Eine tübetische Religionsschrift. Leipzig, Karl Tauchnitz, 1835.
Oblong 8vo. Size: 11 x 23,5 cm. Lvs (8) including one blank. Stereotype printing of Tibetan woodcut plates. Original yellow printed wrappers, chipped at spine and along edges, small tear restored verso of lower cover. Small stamp on front cover. Old ownership signature and a few marginal annotations in pencil. This is a Tibetan translation of the Heart Sutra (In Sanskrit: Prajnaparamita Hrdaya) or the Essence of Wisdom Sutra. It is a very short sutra and the most common recited by Buddhist followers of the world. Schilling von Canstadt (1786-1837) was a renowned orientalist and pioneer of telegraphy. During travels in the 1830's to Mongolia and Siberia he made great collections of Tibetan, Mongolian and Chinese books and manuscripts which were placed at the Asiatic Museum in St. Petersburg. The duplicates Schilling donated to the Institut de France, of which the Tibetan material was later catalogued by J. Bacot. See J. Bacot, "La collection tibétaine Schilling von Canstadt à la bibliothèque de l'Institut" (Journal Asiatique, tome CCIV, 1924, pp. 341-48).

[TIBETAN - MONGOLIAN MANUSCRIPT]: "DBYANGS-GSAL-BZ'UG"., [A calligrapher's manual for writing the Lanydza (Ranjana) script]. Mongolia, 19th century.
[TIBETAN - MONGOLIAN MANUSCRIPT]: "DBYANGS-GSAL-BZ'UG".
[A calligrapher's manual for writing the Lanydza (Ranjana) script]. Mongolia, 19th century.
A manuscript giving the alphabet and ligatures of the religious Lanydza (originally Ranjana) script used for special Buddhist texts. Format: 10 x 31 cm. Lvs 9, numbered 1-9 in Tibetan. Comprising one "title page",16 pages of text and one page with closing text. Loose as issued within later Oriental silk cloth covered boards. The text is written in rows comprising the alphabet and ligatures of Lanydza in black ink; followed by regular Tibetan script in red ink and the transcription in Mongolian characters in black ink. First and last leaves mounted on old paper with some wear and marginal holes. Frayed at margins and a few leaves with marginal repairs. Tha Ranjana script is one of many alphabets which derived from the Brahmi script. It developed during the 11th century and was used until the mid 20th century in India and Nepal by the Newar people for religious texts. The Tibetans used this script which they call Lanydza when writing original Sanskrit texts and for writing decorative scripts in temples and in the drawings of mandalas. Many manuscripts written in Lanydza were preserved in the old monasteries of Tibet but most of them were destroyed following the Chinese take over. A charming and most unusal specimen.

Pp. xii, 283, (1). With frontispiece, 5 maps and 39 plates with many photographs taken by the author. Publisher's cloth, somewhat faded. First edition. Frank Kingdon-Ward (1885-1958) was a British botanist and explorer who participated in about 25 expeditions to Tibet, China, Burma and Assam during a period of nearly 50 years, mainly to collect new species to bring back to England. This work is a narrative of Kingdon-Ward's expedition in 1911 to the north of Yunnan and South-Eastern Tibet to collect plants for the horticultural firm Bees Ltd of Liverpool. He brought back about 200 different specimens of which some proved new to science. Unfortunately many of the seeds he introduced were unsuccessful and refused to flower. Among his successful plants were the first viable seed of Meconopsis betonicifolia (Himalayan blue poppy), Primula florindae (giant cowslip) and Rhododendron wardii (a yellow-flowered species). ROSSER, RICHARD HENRY:, [Drop-head title]. A Journey to Shipki. A Frontier Village of Chinese Thibet. 1872. No place or date, ca 1875.
ROSSER, RICHARD HENRY:
[Drop-head title]. A Journey to Shipki. A Frontier Village of Chinese Thibet. 1872. No place or date, ca 1875.
Small 4to. Pp. 24. Numerous corrections and deletions in ink to the text. With three hand drawn maps (on three pages) rendered in black, red and blue ink. In addition there is a hand written list (1,5 pages) titled "Voyages to & from, Marches, & Travels in India" made between 1866 and 1875. Contemporary half calf over pebble grained cloth, spine ruled in gilt, front cover lettered in gilt. Presumably a printed proof of an unpublished travel account, maybe an article for a journal, annotated by the author and provided with interesting cartographic material. This travel journal describes Rosser's journey into Himachal Pradesh which started out on April 12th,1872 from Mian-Mir (close to Lahore) into the Himalayas across mountains, through remote lands and beautiful valleys, by faraway villages and carried on right up to the Tibetan border. Parts of the journey became quite dangerous and difficult especially when crossing frozen snow drifts. Rosser came to Lama settlements in the Himalayas (Murung and Nisung) which previously had not been visited by any Europeans. After 450 miles mainly on foot crossing seven snow passes of between 12500 and 15000 feet the journey ended in Simla on June 5, the same year. At Simla he met with Robert Shaw who just had been appointed British Minister at Lek in Ladak. The journal describes the route with detailed information about the scenery, wildlife, flora and fauna, the villages, what the people look like, their dresses, food, the camps, etc. Rosser is a curious observer and he writes about the landscape and the natives in a very expressive and humble way. The three beautiful hand drawn maps show the route; 1. From Gugret to Manglaor; 2. Along the Sutlej valley to the Chinese frontier; 3. From Jibi to Kot, and further to Simla. Shipki as mentioned in the title, is a frontier town on the Tibetan border in the Kinnaur (Kunawur) district, a remote mountain district in the valley of the river Sutlej. Shipki La is the border post on the old Hindustan-Tibet Road and also the very place from where Sutlej river enters India from Tibet. Several pages are devoted to the beautiful Kunawur district with its strong culture and old traditions. Rosser gives much detailed information about the geography, people, animals, climate, religion, diseases, begari, agriculture, etc. of this region. Captain Richard Henry Rosser was born in 1843 in Meerut, India. Between early 1872 and 1875 he served at the British Army Fort at Lahore, during which time he made this journey. We haven't been able to find any published work by him.
