Contemporary half calf, spine ruled in gilt, extremities rubbed. First ten leaves, map and portraits foxed. First edition of this Norwegian account of Upper Siam and Laos. With old inscription on half title. First edition. In 1876 Haller travelled by elephant across the Shan states (Eastern Burma) and Siam primarily to investigate the possibility of building a railway linking the countries with British India. It's a comprehensive narrative with information about the people, topography, trade and customs, etc. and supplemented with interesting illustrations. The eight maps show the route by different regions, with indication of a proposed railway. A wonderful copy. Cordier BI 629. Herbert (World Bibl. Series; Burma) no. 48.

Partly with some worming in volume two (some minor loss of text). First edition of this important work on Siam based on some manuscripts received from the bishop of Tabraca (Vicar Apostolic de Siam) as well as from other missionaries in Siam. The work was suppressed at the request of the Vicar Apostolic of Siam, who claimed the author had taken too many liberties with his interpretation of the manuscript notes and journals.
