Small 8vo. Pp. 192. With title printed in red and black. With 158 wood cut illustrations. Some minor staining. Contemporary Italian decorated stiff wrappers, rubbed, spine worn and partly restored. A late edition of a very popular Italian travel guide to the Holy Land, first published in the 16th century. It comprises instructions to anyone who wants to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem including advice about what clothes, food and money to bring, what to do in case of seasickness, etc. Includes a table "Tavola delli miglia" with distances between different places along the route and Jerusalem. The charming naive woodcuts depict views of Venice, Corfu, Modone, Rhodes, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Jericho, Damascus,Tunis, Alessandria, Cairo, Babylon etc., and of churches, temples, castles, exotic animals and plants. In 1527 Father Bianchi No√® made his pilgrim voyage to the Holy land. Already in 1500 an anonymous written book about a voyage from Venice to the Holy Land appeared.
