[PEELE, GEORGE], The Old Wives Tale 1595
[PEELE, GEORGE]
The Old Wives Tale 1595
Oxford: The Malone Society, 1965. Reprint. Buff cloth cover spine on papered boards. 230mm x 190mm (9" x 7"). [48pp.]. Printed for the Malone Society by Horace Hart at the Oxford University Press 1908. A play by now assumed to have been written by George Peele and first printed in England in 1595. The play has been identified as the first English work to satirize the romantic dramas popular at the time. Although only the titles of most of these popular works have survived, they seem to be unrelated composites of popular romantic and fairy-tale motifs of the era.. VG : in very good condition with glassine dust jacket. Ink mark and inscription to upper edge of front pastedown .

[MIDDLETON THOMAS], The Second Maiden's Tragedy
[MIDDLETON THOMAS]
The Second Maiden's Tragedy
Oxford: The Malone Society, 1964. Reprint. Buff cloth cover spine on papered boards. 230mm x 190mm (9" x 7"). xiii, 78pp. Printed for the Malone Society by Horace Hart at the Oxford University Press 1909. The Second Maiden's Tragedy is a Jacobean play that survives only in manuscript. It was written in 1611, and performed in the same year by the King's Men. The manuscript was acquired, but never printed, by the publisher Humphrey Moseley after the closure of the theatres in 1642. In 1807, the manuscript was acquired by the British Museum. Victorian poet and critic, Algernon Swinburne, was the first to attribute this work to Thomas Middleton; this judgement has since been joined by most editors and scholars.. VG : in very good condition with glassine dust jacket. Ink mark and inscription to upper edge of front pastedown. Some pages uncut .
