BARRIS, TED
Victory at Vimy Canada Comes of Age, April 9
Toronto: Thomas Allen & Son, 2007. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0887622534. As new; A near-fine volume in a near-fine DJ, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. B&W photographs an maps ; 9.0 X 6.0 X 1.4 inches; 300 pages; "At the height of the First World War, on Easter Monday April 9, 1917, in early morning sleet, sixteen battalions of the Canadian Corps rose along a six-kilometre line of trenches in northern France against the occupying Germans. All four Canadian divisions advanced in a line behind a well-rehearsed creeping barrage of artillery fire. By nightfall, the Germans had suffered a major setback. The Ridge, which other Allied troops had assaulted previously and failed to take, was firmly in Canadian hands. The Canadian Corps had achieved perhaps the greatest lightning strike in Canadian military history. One Paris newspaper called it "Canada's Easter gift to France." Of the 40,000 Canadians who fought at Vimy, nearly 10,000 became casualties. Many of their names are engraved on the famous monument that now stands on the ridge to commemorate the battle. It was the first time Canadians had fought as a distinct national army, and in many ways, it was a coming of age for the nation. The achievement of the Canadians on those April days in 1917 has become one of our lasting myths. Based on first-hand accounts, including archival photographs and maps, it is the voices of the soldiers who experienced the battle that comprise the thrust of the book.". CASTLE, IAN
London 1914–17 the Zeppelin Menace
Oxford: Osprey Publishing, 2008. First Edition. Softcover. ISBN: 1846032458. Card covers show very light shelf wear, small crease on bottom forecorner. ; A bright, solid book.; Campaign #193; B&W and Colour Photographs, Maps; 9.7 X 7.4 X 0.7 inches; 96 pages; "Ian Castle tells the story of Germany's air offensive against Britain in World War I (1914-1918), in which, from May 1915 until October 1917, zeppelins dropped thousands of tons of bombs on London. Initially the city was woefully unprotected but an integrated air defense system was progressively developed in response to the early months' destruction and casualties. Over a year was to pass before the first zeppelin was downed over British soil by the Royal Flying Corps but successes then steadily mounted as observation and communication networks improved and new tactics were learned. In his revealing account of a terrifying campaign which was to be repeated only decades later in the Luftwaffe's Blitz, the author describes the birth of a new arena of warfare, "the home front."".
