HELM, CHARLES & MIKE MURTHA & ROBERT WILLIAM SANDFORD
The Forgotten Explorer Samuel Prescott Fay's 1914 Expedition to the Northern Rockies
Surrey, BC: Rocky Mountain Books, 2009. First Edition. Softcover. ISBN: 189752255X. Card covers show light shelf wear, minor creasing, light corner curl. ; A tight solid book. B&W photographs ; Trade PB; Mountain Classics Collection; 6.5 X 1 X 9.25 inches; 292 pages; "North of Jasper, in the Canadian Rockies, is a large, spectacular wilderness of alpine flower meadows, glaciated peaks, canyons, waterfalls and abundant wildlife. Compared to the millions each year who visit Banff and Jasper national parks immediately to the south, this northern area sees few visitors. Fewer still have ever attempted to travel through this wilderness in one continuous trip. The first to do so was Samuel Prescott Fay in 1914. To this day, his exact route has never been duplicated. During his expedition, Fay kept a detailed journal (currently held at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC), which he provided to the US Biological Survey (now known as the US Fish & Wildlife Service) and to various Canadian government authorities. However, the journal in its entirety has never been published. Brought together for the first time in book form, both maps and journal entries provide an early and dynamic record of an area that remains little known to this day.". Very Good .

B&W illustrations; 6.5 X 1 X 9.5 inches; 261 pages; "In May 1845 Sir John Franklin sailed westward from England in search of the Northwest Passage and was never seen again. Some thirty-five years later, Heinrich Klutschak of Prague, artist and surveyor on a small expedition led by Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka of the 3rd US Cavalry Regiment, stumbled upon the grisly remains at Starvation Cove of the last survivors among Franklin's men. 'Overland to Starvation Cove' is the first English translation of Klutschak's account. A significant contribution to Canadian exploration history, it is also an important anthropological document, providing some of the earliest reliable descriptions of the Aivilingmiut, the Utkuhikhalingmiut, and the Netsilingmiut. But above all, it is a fascinating story of arctic adventure.". Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket .

Ancient Mariner the Amazing Adventures of Samuel Hearne the Sailor Who Walked to the Arctic Ocean
Toronto: Harpercollins Publishers Ltd, 2003. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0002000989. Illustrated by Map Endpapers. DJ and boards show very light shelf wear. ; A bright, solid book dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; B&W Illustrations; 9.0 X 6.3 X 1.3 inches; 334 pages; "Samuel Hearne is grudgingly recognized as the eighteenth-century British adventurer who, during a remarkable three-year odyssey, became the first European to reach the Arctic coast of North America. In Ancient Mariner, McGoogan demonstrates that Hearne was far more complex, accomplished and influential than the history books suggest. Beginning with Hearne’s entry into the Royal Navy at twelve years of age, McGoogan paints an authentic portrait of eighteenth-century British life, both on and off the wooden sailing ships. After serving as a midshipman during the tumultuous Seven Years’ War, Hearne moved to London and, in 1766, just twenty-one, joined the Hudson’s Bay Company. Based at the company’s northernmost fort, an ambitious Hearne embarked on an overland quest for rich veins of copper supposedly located “far to the northward where the sun don’t set”—and also to discover the Northwest Passage. In his posthumously published journal, Hearne described the three-year odyssey—a harrowing journey marked by hardship, hunger and disappointment, and mitigated only by his friendship with the legendary Dene leader Matonabbee. Hearne trekked more than 3,500 miles. His epic adventure culminated in the infamous and still-controversial massacre at “Bloody Falls”—an event that, as McGoogan shows, changed him forever. Drawing on naval history, fur-trade history and literary history, McGoogan portrays Hearne as a skilled navigator, a pioneering anthropologist, a ground-breaking naturalist and a gifted natural artist. He fell in love with a native woman and never fully recovered after she died tragically.". Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket .

Dead Reckoning the Untold Story of the Northwest Passage
Toronto: Patrick Crean Editions, 2017. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 1443441260. Light wear to dustjacket ; A near-fine volume in a VG DJ, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. ; 9.4 X 6.5 X 1.6 inches; 438 pages; "Dead Reckoning challenges the conventional narrative, which emerged out of Victorian England and focused almost exclusively on Royal Navy officers. By integrating non-British and fur-trade explorers and, above all, Canada’s indigenous peoples, this work brings the story of Arctic discovery into the twenty-first century. Orthodox history celebrates such naval figures as John Franklin, Edward Parry and James Clark Ross. Dead Reckoning tells their stories, but the book also encompasses such forgotten heroes as Thanadelthur, Akaitcho, Tattanoeuck, Ouligbuck, Tookoolito and Ebierbing, to name just a few. Without the assistance of the Inuit, Franklin’s recently discovered ships, Erebus and Terror, would still be lying undiscovered at the bottom of the polar sea. The book ranges from the sixteenth century to the present day, looks at climate change and the politics of the Northwest Passage, and recognizes the cultural diversity of a centuries-old quest.". Franklin disappeared into the Arctic in 1845, yet people remain fascinated with his final doomed voyage: what happened?
