[Emaki Painted Handscroll 絵巻 of Makura Zōshi 枕草子 by Sei Shonagon -少納言] Izeri Sosui, artist c. Early 20th C [Emaki Painted Handscroll 絵巻 of Makura Zōshi 枕草子 by Sei Shonagon -少納言 ] Very long (approximately 33 feet long and 10 3/4 inches tall) black and white painted and calligraphed illustrated version of this classic Heian era literary work, the Pillow Book. The original work was finished about 1002 after the author had spent years as a lady-in-waiting at the court. The images in this scroll are said to have been first created by an anonymous female artist to go along with the calligraphy of a Buddhist monk named Gokōken-in in the 13th century. The original still exists as an Important Cultural Treasure in Japan. The scroll has been closely copied many times throughout history. I recently saw a version done in the late 16th century. Ours is a magnificent effort created in the 20th century by Izeri Sosui, born in Kumamoto in 1882. Sosui was known for his efforts in the Yamato-e 大Oe絵 genre, so this recreation of the classic scroll is a product of long study of the techniques employed. There is a bit of abrasion to the brocade wraparound, else in lovely condition in a wooden box. .

Ise DåChå« No Maki ä¼å¢é中ä¹å·» [Pilgrimage to Ise, or, on the Road to Ise, 2 Hand Scrolls - Emaki 絵巻]
Ise Dōchū no Maki 伊勢道中之巻 [Pilgrimage to Ise, or, On the Road to Ise, 2 hand scrolls - Emaki 絵巻] Height 15 " Length, Scroll One: Over 32 feet with 24 scenes along the way. Scroll Two: About 36 feet with 24 scenes... The amount of work that went into this commission is startling. As some of the scenes are quite original and depict everyday life in Taishō Japan, one may assume the artist painted in studio from sketches he created along the way. The binding and box are of the highest quality.. A deluxe production. Kōka 弘華, artist Taishō 12 [1923] Through the years, the general opinion of the work done in the Nihonga genre has changed for the better, for good reason.. There are many reasons, but perhaps the most significant is the understanding that Nihonga painting (and printmaking, for that matter - Shinhanga) was an adaptation to the new artistic opportunities made possible by the pigments, new artistic technologies in general. Materials sciences were exploding with the introduction of Western scientific methodology. New materials, both homegrown and imported , created new art. One might say that Nihonga painting and so-called "Shin-hanga" are closely related in that they expanded the depiction of traditional themes and subjects with new capabilities. It would take a while for the combination to become more harmonious, but the results could sometimes be extraordinary. The scrolls at hand were almost certainly the product of a wealthy patron from Kyoto wishing to inscribe a pilgrimage to the shrines at Ise. To that end, he commissioned this work from a painter whose art name was Kōka 弘華, presumably a local artist, as his paintings do occasionally surface in the marketplace in Kyoto, even today. Kōka had an extraordinary way with color.. even a brief look at his work reveals a confidence and boldness which is very immediate, very pleasing. He manages to avoid clich by recasting familiar scenes from the pilgrimage with power and interest.. He has also introduced several original views along the way to heighten the reality.. Rainstorms, crowded streets. The quotidian contemporary enlivening the traditional.. The brushwork is sure and supple.. Really a masterpiece of the genre. My gallery friends in Japan and I have struggled for years to figure out if the art name Kōka could have been an early career usage by a famous Nihonga practitioner of later years.. But, now, I am ready to send it on its way as a gifted moment by an unknown. Brilliant and unique...

1800. [Zodiacal Animals Handscroll] [Emaki - Handscroll 絵巻] [C. 1850] [Emaki - Handscroll 絵巻]. A handscroll of zodiacal animals measures 29 x 582 cm. intotal length with 26 cm. blank at the start on heavy paper in a brocade cover. Two scrolls, each over 30 feet long and 10" high. The scroll set was done in some 250 - 300 copies by 18 members of the Tokyo Manga Association (Tokyo Manga Kai 東京漫画会), each set hand painted. It would appear that the trip upon which the set was based took place in 1920-21 and the paintings must have been finished soon after. The inventory of artists involved include some famous names: Mizushima Niō 水
爾保布, Kondō Kōichiro 近藤浩一路, Okamoto Ippei 岡oe一平, Maekawa Sempan 前川千帆 and Hiratsuka Un'ichi 平塚 運一, among others. The Great Earthquake must have destroyed quite a few and the war many more. Now the set appears infrequently in the market. Housed in a wooden box inscribed on the inside of the cover, with hanko (by artist Kōichiro Kondō 近藤浩一路 ?). Our copy has scant foxing and is quite well painted. A very nice example of this genre of hand-painted multiples. .

1919. tani Sony 大谷 尊由(1886-1939) & Iguchi Kash 井口華秋 (1880-1930), artist TOKAID GOJSAN-TSUGI EMAKI 東海道五十三次絵巻 Kyoto Taisho 11 [1922]. Eight handscrolls with woodcut coloring over collotype, complete. The scrolls have bone jiku with brocade covers and sumi over gold title labels. The pictures of the stations of the old Tkaid alternate between Sony and Kash. Most station names are well known, but there are alternate local names, and in some cases other place names are itemized parenthetically. Colophon: Endnote. Date of publication Jan. 15, Taisho 11 (1922). Price: 500. Artists: Otani Sony and Iguchi Kash. Publisher: Nakamura Taikan. Printer: Motohashi Sadajir. Publishing House: Nihon Taikan-sha. It goes without saying that the price of 500 yen (at the time worth about US$200 in gold), a shocking amount, was reflective of the enormous costs associated with the project. That sum came to a bit less than a male factory worker's yearly wage and quite a bit more than a female factory worker. The use of collotype as the "shita-e", then over-printing with heavy opaque mineral pigments time and again to derive the rich palette of the finished scrolls was not a method conducive to economy. A bit of a vanity production as Otani Sony was the younger brother of an important Buddhist prelate and it seems most of the copies ended up in the hands of Buddhist temples. Sony was also a Buddhist priest and was made a cabinet Minister for Japan (Colonial Affairs) in 1939 - illustrating the continuing importance of the ideal of a cultured man as polymath. The publisher went bankrupt soon after the appearance of the Tokaido set. Our copy is enclosed in its original worn black lacquer box, title in gilt. The scrolls are in fine condition, with a few creases but none of the usual foxing. There are literally hundreds of feet of remarkable images. (See Roger Keyes' extensive description of this major discovery in his catalogue of the NYPL exhibition of EHON.). .

Heian Tōyō Jūnigetsu Jimbutsu Gazu 平安東陽十Oeoe人物画図. 29 cm. tall and about 684 cm long (over 20 feet). Shimizu Tōyō was a Shijō style Japanese painter who has captured the energy and fun of the holidays of the twelve months in Kyōto in this scroll. The handscroll was done and signed by him in Meiji 5 [1872], when he was in his early 30s; he would die at 45 in 1894. Born and raised under the old regime in Kyoto, he was a talented practitioner of its art. Also known under the names Yoshimasa 義質 and Sennosuke 扇之助, he studied under established artist Nakajima Kayo 中
華陽 (1813 - 1877) and mastered the traditional Shijō school subjects of people, flowers and birds. In a clean brocade cover with just a bit of creasing throughout. In what appears to be an original wooden box from the Meiji era. .

[SKETCHTOUR GENRE] NAKAZAWA Hiromitsu, artist, Saigoku San-Ju^-San-Sho Junrei Emaki
[SKETCHTOUR GENRE] NAKAZAWA Hiromitsu, artist
Saigoku San-Ju^-San-Sho Junrei Emaki
1946. [SKETCH TOUR GENRE] NAKAZAWA Hiromitsu, artist. SAIGOKU SAN-JU^-SAN-SHO JUNREI EMAKI. Kyoto, Kanao Bun'endo^, publisher. Sho^wa 21 [1946]. Oblong folio of o^ban size woodblock prints after designs by Hiromitsu, detailing the famous pilgrimage sites (and sights) in western Japan. The blocks were cut by Okada Seijiro^ and the printers were Nishimura Kumakichi and Takagi Kiyomitsu. This portfolio project was initially completed and printed in 1925. This edition, printed from the same blocks at the very end of Kanao's life, was obviously issued as a companion piece to the THIRTY-SIX VIEWS OF OSAKA, which Kanao also published in 1946. The colors of the original 1925 edition were quite a bit more light and "crumbly" than the bolder colors used in this printing, which accord with that used in the Osaka series. (I personally like this bolder approach to Hiromitsu's work.) There are eleven color woodblock printed preliminary pages, a table of contents page, 37 pilgrimage views, a final portrait of Hiromitsu by an artist friend, and eleven typeset caption pages, explaining the pilgrimage sites, (in Japanese). A lovely and very important series of images, produced by the most important publisher of the "sketchtour" genre. A set in very nice condition, bound into the original printed covers (approx. 25 x 36.7 cm). Complete, in a tied chemise case. .
