Plates depict various scenes such as "The Temptation", "The Finding of Moses", "Saul and the Witch of Endor" and "Daniel in the Den of the Lions". All printed by publishers Adam and Co Limited. Includes the book of Genesis, Job and Malachi from the Old Testament, and the book of Matthew, Colossians, and Revelation from the New Testament. Copperplate ink inscriptions to "Deaths" family register page, dated 1892 and 1903. Bound in original decorative calf binding with brass extremities with hinges. Externally, a trifle rubbed with front board held by the cords only, and shelfwear to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Separate title page for the New Testament (dated 1682) and the Psalms (1683). Original black leather binding, all edges gilt with decorations. A rare example of gauffering, a technique which involved impressing a pattern into the edges of a book after they had been gilded, using warmed finishing tools or rolls. This labor-intensive form of decoration never became common, and by the mid-1600s it had mostly died out. A few old library stamps and markings on endpapers and verso of title page but no markings on the binding, old name stamp, old handwritten name "Jacob van Caron". Very Good.

This work features an illustrated title page, general title page, and individual title page for the New Testament. The Freeman family owned the highly profitable sugar plantation 'Freeman's Upper' in Antigua. With over 200 acres, they owned over 160 slaves at a time.To the rear pastedown is a lengthy insight into the Freeman family, written in Antigua on November 25th 1789. The note reads: 'Thomas Freeman the son of Thomas and Ann Freeman born Oct. 19, 1756. Married August 9. 1785 to Christian Ffrye daughter of Francis Ffrye and Dorothy his wife, born the 23. March 1766&apos. This is followed by information on the births, deaths and baptisms of ten individuals over the course of the following century, concluding with Caroline Freeman, who died at Bath Jan 23rd 1857.Loosely inserted is a leaf of paper detailing the births of the Mack family, detailing seven individuals, beginning with Louisa Mack, born October 15th 1758 in Leicester, to Henry Mack, born August 7th 1773 in the Parish of Songwood.A beautifully bound collection of very scarce Anglican works with an important family provenance and connection to the Slave Trade. In a full morocco binding, with gilt detailing and mental clasps. Clasps in full working order, with boards lightly warped to aid in their closure. Light rubbing to boards, with leather exceptionally bright. Front hinge starting, with board holding firm. Contemporary owner's bookplate and label to front pastedown, and family details to rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Front free endpaper has ownership "Daphne Innes" but also 7 larger lettering which has been erased but still visible as indentations still showing. Hinge paper a bit cracked but the cloth hinge is entireoly sound and complete. A heavy book thus porobably extra postage required.
