Andri Pol 287591
Andri Pol "“ Where is Japan
Steidl, 2010. Hardcover. Pp: 320. European visions of Japan are dominated by clichés such as the cherry blossom, the temples, the samurai, the geisha, and Zen. But this has more to do with European longings and utopian ideals than with today's Japan. The photographer Andri Pol has visited the Japanese Islands over many years and he has taken pictures strictly avoiding any such soft-focus clichés. Fascinated and irritated at the same time, Pol casts a sharp eye on the reality of Japan beyond European projections of the Far East. Even though he can't completely avoid the cherry blossom and the tea rites, he encounters human beings who have learned to live between yesterday and tomorrow - masters of the profane. He finds beauty within the everyday life of modern Japan. ISBN: 9783865219930. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

9780241248089 Richard McGregor 209525, Asia's Reckoning
Richard McGregor 209525
Asia's Reckoning
Penguin Books, 2017. Hardcover. Pp: 416. The dramatic story of the relationship between the world's three largest economies, one that is shaping the future of us all, by one of the foremost experts on east Asia. For more than half a century, American power in the Pacific has successfully kept the peace. But it has also cemented the tensions in the toxic rivalry between China and Japan, consumed with endless history wars and entrenched political dynasties. Now, the combination of these forces with Donald Trump's unpredictable impulses and disdain for America's old alliances threatens to upend the region, and accelerate the unravelling of the postwar order. If the United States helped lay the postwar foundations for modern Asia, now the anchor of the global economy, Asia's Reckoning will reveal how that structure is now crumbling. With unrivalled access to archives in the US and Asia, as well as many of the major players in all three countries, Richard McGregor has written a tale which blends the tectonic shifts in diplomacy with the domestic political trends and personalities driving them. It is a story not only of an overstretched America, but also of the rise and fall and rise of the great powers of Asia. The confrontational course on which China and Japan have increasingly set themselves is no simple spat between neighbors. And the fallout would be a political and economic tsunami, affecting manufacturing centers, trade routes, and political capitals on every continent. ISBN: 9780241248089. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

 , Asia - L. Mertens + Theodore Lefevre, ca. 1870
Asia - L. Mertens + Theodore Lefevre, ca. 1870
LARGE 19TH CENTURY FIGURATIVE MAP OF ASIA “Carte d’Asie”, lithograph in colours made by L. Mertens and published around 1870 by Théodore Lefèvre, bookseller in Brussels. Size: 62,5 x 83,5 cm. Before the Industrial Revolution in the mid-to-late 19th century, demand for oriental goods such as porcelain, silk, spices, and tea remained the driving force behind European imperialism. The Western European stake in Asia remained confined largely to trading stations and strategic outposts necessary to protect trade. Industrialization, however, dramatically increased European demand for Asian raw materials; with the severe Long Depression of the 1870s provoking a scramble for new markets for European industrial products and financial services in Africa, the Americas, Eastern Europe, and especially in Asia. This scramble coincided with a new era in global colonial expansion known as "the New Imperialism", which saw a shift in focus from trade and indirect rule to formal colonial control of vast overseas territories ruled as political extensions of their mother countries. Western imperialism in Asia intensified as European powers sought to expand their empires, exploit resources, and establish control over strategic territories. A period characterized by increased economic penetration, political dominance, and cultural influence. France extended its colonial empire in Southeast Asia, and established French Indochina including Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Japan underwent rapid industrialization and modernization during the late 19th century, transforming into a major power in Asia. The Meiji Restoration (1868) marked a period of reforms that enabled Japan to resist Western imperialism and eventually adopt imperialistic policies itself. It is the time of the Great Game, where the British and Russian Empires rivalled over influence in Central Asia, primarily in Afghanistan, Persia, and Tibet. The two colonial empires used military interventions and diplomatic negotiations to acquire and redefine territories in Central and South Asia. Russia conquered Turkestan, and Britain expanded and set the borders of British colonial India. This large map of Asia captures the political boundaries of that moment in time: Arabia (incorporating modern day Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, and the Gulf States), “Turkish Asia” including Ottoman Syria, the Kingdom of Persia (Qajar Iran), the Kingdom of Kabul (Afghan Empire), Balochistan (part of modern day Pakistan), Hindustan (the Indian Subcontinent), Russian Tartary (Siberia), Independent Tartary (Russian Turkestan), the Birman Empire (including Siam and modern day Malaysia), French Indochina (with Cambodia, Cochinchina/Vietnam), the Chinese Empire and Japan. The map is surrounded by an interesting representation of Asia: Chinese workers, Malay people, the Grand Mughal of India, a platypus (the egg laying mammal), jugglers, a zebu (camel cow), a Chinese junk, “Persia and the Persians”, “Banians” (Indian merchants), ritualistic cleansing in the Narmada River in India, a Chinese officer, an Indian deity, Parsis (a Persian community in Gujarat, India), “The Priests of Buddha”, Gondi people (India), an elephant, “dance of the Bayadères” (India), a cobra snake, a Mandarin Chinese, inhabitants of Sumatra (modern day Indonesia), Indians from Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh, India). 9780709071686 George Fetherling 161460, A Biographical Dictionary of the World's Assassins
George Fetherling 161460
A Biographical Dictionary of the World's Assassins
Robert Hale, 2002. Linnen band met stofomslag. Pp: 391. Until now, there has been no single source for the life stories of assassins in various eras and cultures: the infamous ones and the surprisingly forgotten, the ideologues and the zealots, the sociopaths and the mercenary killers. A Biographical Dictionary of the World's Assassins fills this gap for the benefit of the true-crime fans, the historian, the student and the general reader alike. We all know the names Lee Harvey Oswald and John Wilkes Booth. But who assassinated the Archduke Ferdinand in 1914, igniting the First World War? What wealthy aristocrat killed Rasputin and lived on until 1967? How many different people attempted to assassinate Hitler - or Queen Victoria? Which modern world leader holds the record for escaping assassins' plots - and, more to the point, who were the plotters? How have assassins in Japan, say, differed from those in the United States? What assassins have been produced by such famously peace-loving societies as Canada and Australia? to browse or to read from cover to cover, whether as a refreshingly new take on history and politics or as a psychological portrait of the assassin personality. It is much more than a ready-reference, and has no political subtext. Rather, it is a collection of biographical stories, a few well-known but most obscure, dealing with individual assassins from the ancient world to the present day. Researched with care and told with style and insight, A Biographical Dictionary of the World's Assassins is a complete chronicle of some of the most influential crimes in history. 9780316296618 Malcolm Gladwell 39755, The Bomber Mafia. A Dream, A Temptation, And The Longest Night Of the Second World War
Malcolm Gladwell 39755
The Bomber Mafia. A Dream, A Temptation, And The Longest Night Of the Second World War
Little Brown. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 240. In The Bomber Mafia, Malcolm Gladwell weaves together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard to examine one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history. Most military thinkers in the years leading up to World War II saw the airplane as an afterthought. But a small band of idealistic strategists, the "œBomber Mafia," asked: What if precision bombing could cripple the enemy and make war far less lethal? In contrast, the bombing of Tokyo on the deadliest night of the war was the brainchild of General Curtis LeMay, whose brutal pragmatism and scorched-earth tactics in Japan cost thousands of civilian lives, but may have spared even more by averting a planned US invasion. In The Bomber Mafia, Gladwell asks, "œWas it worth it?" Things might have gone differently had LeMay`s predecessor, General Haywood Hansell, remained in charge. Hansell believed in precision bombing, but when he and Curtis LeMay squared off for a leadership handover in the jungles of Guam, LeMay emerged victorious, leading to the darkest night of World War II. The Bomber Mafia is a riveting tale of persistence, innovation, and the incalculable wages of war. ISBN: 9780316296618. Cond./Kwaliteit: Ramsj.

9780878467693 , The Brittle Decade. Visualizing Japan in the 1930s
The Brittle Decade. Visualizing Japan in the 1930s
Museum of Fine Arts. Hardcover. Pp: 176. Modernity took many forms in 1930s Japan, but in the tumultuous years before militarism pushed the country toward global aggression, it was most visibly associated with a glittering consumer culture. Inundated with western jazz-age trends and new technologies, Japan's big cities, especially Tokyo, offered the most enticing attractions to a newly liberated generation: bustling streets of department stores, cafés and teahouses, movie theaters and ballroom dance halls. Modern architecture, industrial design and fashion overshadowed traditional arts as Japan strove to take its place in a cosmopolitan world. The Brittle Years examines the different ways in which designers and artists visualized what it meant to be modern in Japan in the years leading up to World War II. Its 160 full-color illustrations of paintings, textiles and graphic arts are astonishing not only for their great visual impact but also for the insight they provide into a rapidly transforming nation. Among the more surprising images are kimonos bearing patterns of tanks or futuristic cityscapes, paintings of fashionable Japanese women with bobbed hair in western dress and handbills of factory and agricultural workers joined in solidarity. Essays by leading experts on Japanese art and history, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning author John W. Dower, elucidate the many tensions within Japanese society and show how and why such images of power, progress, and beauty helped the nation celebrate and divert modernity to new purposes during these brittle years.
