Todestag Palestrinas im Jahre 1994 veranstalteten wissenschaftlichen Wettbewerb zurück, bei dem die von Reinhold Schlötterer eingereichte Studie zur Musik Palestrinas mit einem ersten Preis ausgezeichnet wurde. Dahinter stehen die Erkenntnisse und Erfahrungen einer langjährigen intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk Palestrinas im Zusammenhang mit Übungen zur Historischen Satzlehre (Palestrinasatz) an der Universität München. Nach einer bereits im Jahre 2001 erschienenen Ausgabe in italienischer Übersetzung liegt die Arbeit nun in der ursprünglichen deutschen Fassung vor. Ziel des Buches ist es, ein aus heutiger Sicht gültiges Bild von der Musik Palestrinas zu umreissen. Nach einem kurzen biographischen Überblick werden einzelne Aspekte der Komposition behandelt, wobei elementaren Mehrstimmigkeitsmodellen und der Verbindung von Sprache und musikalischem Satz besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wird. In einem zweiten Teil werden die unter dem spezifischen Gesichtspunkt von Werkgattung und Einzelwerk hervortretenden Strukturen behandelt. Palestrina wird dabei nicht nur als Kirchenkomponist, sondern auch als ein bedeutender Madrigalist herausgestellt. Abschliessend geht es um eine allgemeine Würdigung der Komponistenpersönlichkeit Palestrinas, um einen kurzen Vergleich mit seinem grossen Zeitgenossen Orlando di Lasso und um die nach seinem Tod im Bewusstsein der Musikwelt und in konkreten Kompositionen weiterlebende Ausstrahlung seiner Musik.
