JENYNS, SOAME
Later Chinese Porcelain: The Ch'Ing Dynasty (1644-1912)
Faber and Faber Limited, London. 1965, 3rd Edition. (ISBN: 0571047610). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 16.5 x 25.5 cm; 0.763 kg; 111 pages plus appendix with plates. Includes 120 pages of monochrome half-tone illustrations and 6 colour plates.; Used book in good condition with signs of wear, namely some wear marks, scuffs and tears on the dust jacket. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; This book is devoted less to the familiar famille verte and famille rose which were largely export wares made specially for the European market than to the wares of the same period in the true Chinese taste. When it was first published in 1951 interest in the latter wares, which were not on the whole well represented in western collections, was limited, but it was stimulated first by the great Burlington House exhibition in 1935 and since then by the display of the imperial collections in the National Palace Museum in Taiwan, which have become well known to western connoisseurs. Ch'ing porcelain in the Chinese taste is now better know and appreciated than ever before. Mr. Jenyn's pioneer work must have played no small part in bringing to the study of Chinese porcelain a greater appreciation in the west of the finest porcelain of the Ch'ing dynasty. His book still remains the only major work dealing with this subject. For this third edition the text had been revised and brought up to date, and there are two new colour plates. Fair/Dust Jacket Included.

MACINTOSH, DUNCAN
Chinese Blue and White Porcelain
Book Marketing Ltd, Hong Kong. 1988, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 9622110460). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22.5 x 29 cm; 1.17 Kg; 181 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the dust jacket and interior. Previous owner sticker glued to the front free endpaper. The dust jacket is protected with a tight clearcover.; Blue and White porcelain has been in the mainstream of Chinese ceramic production since the beginning of the fifteenth century, but, nevertheless, has at times had a somewhat chequered history. When it first appeared in the fourteenth century Chinese connoisseurs ahd regarded it as vulgar and garish, and a hundred years later, after receiving immense Imperial patronage during the Xuande reign, was the victim of an austere puritanical reaction. Since the Chenghua reign later in the fifteenth century, however, "blue and white" has gone from strengh, and in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries had an immense effect on porcelain production in the West. In this new history, the author traces the history of "blue and white" from its uncertain beginnings to the end of the Qing Dynasty. Considerable attention is also paid throughout to social and political events so that the reader can see something of the purely "human" conditions that were contemporary with the production of the porcelain. "This book will be of value not only to the expert, but also to the beginner who will find, in a handy form, much of value when evaluating the authenticity, provenance and dating of Chinese 'blue and white'." - from the Oriental Art review of the First Edition. MISUGI, T.
Chinese Porcelain Collections in the Near East: Topkapi and Ardebil (3 Volume Set)
Hong Kong University Press. 1981, 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (3 volume set in slipcase with two clasps.).; 23 x 30.5 cm; 7 Kg; Black and white and a few colour illustrations throughout.; Volume I-Introduction, ISBN 962-209-004-4, 273 pages; Volume II-The Topkapi Palace Museum, ISBN 962-209-005-2, 282 pages; Volume III-The Ardebil Shrine Collection, ISBN 962-209-006-0, 372 pages.; Used books with signs of wear on the interior and exterior, as well as the slipcase. The lettering on the front cover and spine is slightly worn. Very good set overall. Interior as new, except for stamps from a previous owner on the rear of the front cover of each volume. The interior of the slipcase is also stamped.; "This volume, together with the one on the collection of Chinese porcelain from the Topkapi Sarayi in Istambul and the Ardebil Shrine in Tehran, was first published by Gakugei Shorin, Tokyo, in 1972 in a three-volume Japanese limited edition, now out of print. This completely revised and rearranged edition in English preserves the scope and all the illustrations of the original edition. In connection with the Topkapi and Ardebil collections special mention must be made to the 1930 Topkapi catalogue by Ernst Zimmermann, John Alexander Pope (Topkapi in 1952 and the Ardebil 1956), as well as articles by Mehdi Bahrami, Sir Percival David, R.L. Hobson and Soame Jenyns. All these have contributed much to my understanding of the collections and their history" excerpt from Volume I.; "When I first stepped into the exhibition room of the Topkpai Saray Museum I was surprised. About five thousand pieces of Chinese porcelain were on display but an even greater number, estimated at six thousand pieces, were still stored in three basements. But the size of the collection is matched in importance by its value, for there are some forty pieces in the collection which are among the finest Chinese blue-and-white ware, made in the fourteenth century. We have had to revise our previous belief the Yuan period was a dark age because of these excellent Yuan pieces which have survived in this collection so far away from China. The blue-and-white porcelain from the Yuan to the Ch'ing period is the largest group in the Topkapi collection but there are also celadons, white, yellow, blue, brown, and polychrome wares. So, to the baptism of Istanbul with the various cultures, Hittite, Egyptian, Roman, Byzantine, Persian, and Islamic, one must now add that of a Chinese ceramic culture. The porcelain of many kinds dates from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century and can be compared in size and quality with the best collections elsewhere." excerpt from Volume II; "What we have come to know as the Ardebil collection of Chinese porcelain consists of about eight hundred pieces of blue-and-white, celadon, polychrome and other porcelains, nearly all of which are not now at Ardebil. Most of these pieces have been removed to the Archaeological Museum in Tehran. The Ardebil collection has special importance, not only because such a collection was made and preserved at all, near the Caspian Sea so far from its place of manufacture in China, but also because it is know that the main collection dates from not later than 1611 when Shab Abbas presented it to the Shrine in the town of Ardebil from which it takes its name and where it was housed until 1935. Even now the important collection, which includes such treasures as nearly forty pieces of fourteenth-century blue-and-white Chinese porcelain, is only partially known. I hope this volume will be welcomed for its extensive illustrations, many in colour, of a large part of the collection, including many of which have not been published before. In addition I have illustrated pieces from the collection which are now in Isfahan and Tabriz. It is reasonable to assume that the latest pieces could not be dated later than the thirty-fifth year of the Wan-li period of the Ming dynasty and the earliest in the middle of the fourteenth century." excerpt from Volume III. Interior in very good condition.; The slipcase shows signs of wear and a small crack on top.; LIMITED EDITION OF 1,000 COPIES OF WHICH THIS IS NUMBER 733. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR HUGH MOSS.; "In this book I believe Hugh Moss has made a quite conclusive case for the authenticity of the yu chih marked porcelains. By doing so he has corrected a far-reaching error of recent Western scholarship in the field of Ch'ing porcelain. An essential part of his case rests on the distinction between the works of three main centres of decoration of Ch'ing porcelain manufactured at Ching-tê Chên. It has, perhaps, been the failure to make that distinction which has caused so much trouble in this most dificult area of Chinese ceramic study. I should also like to observe, with the privilege of hindsight of someone who in the past accepted unquestioningly the dismissal of the yu chic wares, that the traditionally accepted opinion of Chinese scholars should perhaps never have been so readily rejected, nor so little attention given to positive re-attribution of the yu chic wares to some later period, as is necessary if their authenticity is to be denied. THE NATIONAL PALACE MUSEUM
Chinese Cultural Art Treasures: National Palace Museum Illustrated Handbook
The National Palace Museum, Republic of China. 1971, 5th or later Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (without dust jacket - as issued); 16.5 x 23 cm; 1 Kg; 115 pages plus addendum with 138 colour and black and white illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior. Interior in very good condition.; "Throughout the past forty years, China's ancient cultural treasures have been carefully preserved. Those art treasures that were removed to Taiwan date from as early as the Sang and Chou dynasties, and as late as the Ming and Ching dynasties. These treasures, dating from every period in Chinese history, are of the finest quality. To enable both Chinese and foreign scholars to fully understand the collection, and to make connoisseurship and research more convenient, the Palace Museum selected a group of choice art objects, and in November 1965, published a handbook entitled, Chinese Cultural Art Treasures. Within a few months every copy of the first edition of the handbook had been sold. It is the hope of the Museum that this second edition of the handbook, which corrects those typographical errors that inadvertently were included in the first edtiion, will further expand the Museum's contribution to society." excerpt from the foreword to the second edition by Chiang Fu-tsung, Director, April 1966, Taipei. A Thousand Auspicious Meanings: Chinese Porcelain Teapots from the Sapientia Collection for the Domestic Market (Volumes I & II) (Chinese Edition)
Jorge Welsh Research & Publishing, Lisbon/London. 2022, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781838216344). Hardcover. Book, Chinese text; Hardcover in slipcase (2 VOLUMES); 594 pages, 626 colour illustrations and 2 black & white illustrations; 312 colour illustrations; 23,5 x 29,7 cm; 4.4 kg; Volume One - Introduction: Teapots for the Domestic Market; Volume Two - Teapots for the Domestic Market.; This two-volume book focuses on the artistic, cultural, and historical motifs of Chinese porcelain teapots made for the domestic market, and will ultimately be part of a four-volume set, the third and fourth volumes to be dedicated to teapots made for the export market. The collection was started by Franco Cutrupia in 1981, who, soon after arriving in China, became fascinated by the beauty, variety of shapes, and decorative motifs of Chinese porcelain teapots. Later he was joined in his passion for Chinese porcelain by his wife, Pauline Ngai, a Chinese history major and author of this book. The book examines the auspicious motifs that appear in Chinese porcelain decoration, explored through those found on the teapots from the Sapientia Collection. Through the study of these motifs, the author opens up a fascinating insight into Chinese culture and the interpretation of the meanings and significance of each motif. It goes much further than simply cataloguing a collection, exploring deep into Chinese culture and its long and intricate history. The first volume offers a comprehensive introduction, providing a wide perspective on the development and production of containers for a variety of drinking liquids and later teapots, from the Neolithic era through to the 1980's. The second volume discusses 193 of the Sapientia Collection of porcelain teapots, made for the domestic market, covering a period from the 18th to the 20th century. The author, Pauline Ngai, deciphers each motif, their embodied stories, auspicious meanings, and symbols, transforming these treasured objects into sources from which to better understand Chinese culture and history. This book, the result of many years of original research, is a serious reference work and encyclopaedic in interpreting those scenes and auspicious symbols originally intended for the Chinese public. As such it is a valuable resource for all those studying or interested in the subject. New/No Jacket.

HERVOUET, FRANCOIS; HERVOUET, NICOLE; AND BRUNEAU, YVES
La Porcelaine Des Compagnie Des Indes a Décor Occidental
Flammarion, Paris. 1986, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 2080109901). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, French text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 25 x 33.9 cm; 2.76 Kg; 432 pages with 1206 illustrations, 100 in colour.; Minor signs of wear on the front cover, spine and back cover of the dust jacket.; This reference book almost functions as an encyclopaedia, identifying and providing possible dates to a very large range of western scenes painted on Chinese porcelain, commissioned through the East India Companies and that arrived in Europe, and later in the United States, during the 18th century. The idea of asking craftsmen of the Middle Kingdom to paint porcelain according to their own taste emerged very early in the minds of those Europeans who travelled to the Far East. For example, to paint a boat on which they had been sailing for six months on a bowl, or to reproduce an engraving, the portrait of a loved one, among others. In short, Westerners asked for anything that, for one reason or another (and the diversity of orders is incredible), was important to perpetuate through time in an original way. As they returned to their homelands, bringing with them these beautiful objects that had been specially ordered to Chinese artists and that were very much cherished, these began to be used or functioned as memory tokens. Although several books have been written about Chinese export porcelain, particularly since the Second World War, it should be noted that no book had aimed at functioning as an 'inventory' of western decoration on Chinese porcelain destined to the western market. This book intends to serve as a catalogue of all the decorations ordered to be painted on porcelain by the East India Companies of all of the countries. With a short margin of error, we estimate that there should be no more than 1.300 different representations around the world and this book assembles about nine-tenths. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Adventures & Studies of a Collector
Charles E. Tuttle Company: Publishers, Rutland, Vermont & Tokyo, Japan. 1971, 5th or later Edition. (ISBN: 0804801061). Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (lacks the dust jacket); 25.5 x 26 cm; 0.94 Kg; 158 pages with black and white and colour illustrations.; Used book with signs of wear, namely marks of an old sticker removed in the front free endpaper. The hardcover cloth shows also signs of a removed old sticker. The interior is in good condition with no writing or highlighting. Good readable copy.; Few civilizations can boast such a great range and quality of artistic achievement as can the Chinese. The Chinese genius has created a vast store of masterpieces in almost every art form, ranging from monumental cave sculptures to the varied products of skilled artisan - generally classified among the "minor arts". It is in this area of the minor arts that the Chinese have particularly distinguished themselves in the more recent past of their long history. The full flowering of all the arts and crafts during this seventeenth and eighteenth centuries represents, in a way, the crowning accomplished of Chinese art, which subsequently entered a period of general decline. In the words of one commentator, as quoted in the present text: "Probably at no time or place in the history of the world there were craftsmen more active, more ingenious, more encouraged than in the China of Ch'ien Lung (1736-95). Manipulating with equal dexterity every kind of material, metals, stone, pottery, wood, horn, leather, amber, lacquer, mother-of-pearl, the output of their myriads of looms, lathes, kilns, and workshops was amazing in quantity, endless in variety..The abundance was so great that after 130 years of the most reckless wear and tear, the mere remnants still gladden an impoverished world with glimpses of the old enchantment.". This, then, is the period that coincided with the introduction and popularization of snuff in China, and consequently with the development of the snuff bottle. All the skill's and ingenuity of the Chinese artisans were lavished upon the production of these tiny bottles, making them pre-eminent representatives of the best in Chinese craftsmanship. The present work is the first full account in any language of this facet of Chinese art. It includes a comprehensive treatment of the origins and development of the snuff bottle in China as well as over 150 actual-size reproductions, the majority in full color. It is a fascinating story by an enthusiastic collector, who, captivated by the beauty and ingenuity found in these bottles, had the interest to delve into historical background, techniques of manufacture, kind and quality of materials, classification and organizations of types, and the like, as well as a delightfully informal style with which to communicate her wide knowledge and enthusiasm to the reader. As such the book is not only and invaluable document for all interest in the history of Chinese art, but also a lucid and fascinating guidebook for the collector, or would-be collector, both of snuff bottles and of other products of Chinese craftsmanship. Interior as new, apart some minor image blurring in some pages. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; This book establishes a new and accessible approach to thinking about these globally significant objects, drawing on objects from the Victoria and Albert Museum's world famous collection, including many previously unpublished pieces. Chinese ceramics are among the most widely admired and collected ceramics in the world. From elegant Song celadons to decorative Ming vases and colourful Qing famille rose, ceramics produced in China have influenced taste and daily life globally. They are set apart from other world ceramic traditions by their remarkably long history of continuous production, consumption and appreciation and their exceptionally high quality. Because they were widely traded and admired, Chinese ceramics have also had an impact on numerous aspects of global cultural activity, from dining to drinking, decoration to architecture. Ceramics were among the first Chinese objects acquired by the V&A. From 1854, the museum purchased and received as gifts and bequests more than 8,000 examples of all different types. This comprehensive collection forms the focus of this new survey of the subject. Chinese Ceramics offers a design in history of these fascinating objects, emphasizing their origins as designed objects and their related production, consumption and role in trade and transfer. The V&A is also unusual in collecting Republican period pottery and propaganda ware, now emerging as new collecting categories, illustrated and discussed here for the first time. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
