One of the most important books published on the Low Countries in the 16th century by Lodovico (or Luduvico) Guicciardini, being the first detailed description of the principalities and cities of the region which assured the author instant fame. It was the first travel guide of the Netherlands divided into sections, each devoted to a particular region illustrated by engraved plans and views and became immediately popular, with over fifty editions in the 16th and seventeeth century alone. Guicciardini shows us the graduate change concerning the (politcal) situation of the Low Countries as a result of the enduring resistance against the king of Spain. The book covers all aspects of contemporary life in each area as well, including extensive treatment of the fine arts, trade and the commercial concerns of each region. Also an important source for early Dutch history. Lodovico Guicciardini (Florence 1521 - Antwerp 1589), was an Italian businessman and author. He left Italy for Lyons in 1538 and shortly afterwards settled down in Antwerp where, together with his brother Giovan-Battista, he started dealing in cloth, goldthread and similar commodities. As one of the many Italians in Antwerp who tried to make a living, Guicciardini would have remained unknown if in 1567 he had not published this 'Description of the Whole Netherlands'. EMPEROR MAXIMILIAN I
Weisskunig. 2 Volumes. Volume 1: Text Volume 2: Plates.
. In Lichtdruck-Faksimiles nach Fruehdrucken mit Hilfe der Max-Kade-Foundation Inc. New York fuer den Stuttgarter Galerieverein herausgegeben von H. Th. Musper in Verbindung mit Rudolf Buchner, Heinz-Otto Burger und Erwin Peterman." "Die Unterschriften zu den Holzschnitten" (16 p.) in pocket of v. 1.The work of Maximilian I, of Germany, and his secretary, Marx Treitz-Saurwein. 118 of the woodcuts by Hans Burgkmair.Stuttgart, Kohlhammer-Verlag, 1956. 251,467pp. 251 facsimiles of early engravings on plates ,29 illustrations and 8 water-mark illustrations in the text. A beautiful facsimile edition of this substantial and famous volume. Maximilian I, Kaiser (Wiener Neustadt, 1459-1519, Wels), was the son of the Emperor Friedrich III and his consort, a Portuguese princess. By his marriage to Marie of Burgundy in 1477 he united the extensive Burgundian territories (including the Netherlands), with the Habsburg dominions. He was elected German King in 1486, and in 1493 became Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Research indicates this volume to be a quasi-autobiographical work. It tells of his youth, marriage, and campaigns. Its execution was entrusted to his secretary Marx Treitzsauerwein (1450-1527). The emperor died before the work was completed and the MS. was first printed in 1775. Fine hardback set. With dustjackets.( a few small tears in the jackets) Der Weiß Kunig - literally translated as The White King - was prepared in the 16th Century in an apparent collaboration between at least four artists: Leonard Beck (1480-1542); Hans Burgkmair (1473-1531); Hans Schäuffelein (1480-1540); and Hans Springinklee (1490-1540). Bartsch notes that at least 99 of the plates may be attributed to Burgkmair, at least two further may be attributed to Beck (Plates 39 and 78), and one each to Springinklee and Schäuffelein. Jost Dienecker (also known as Jost de Neeker) is among the artisans thought to have worked as engravers on the work. Also known as The Life and Reign of Emperor Maximilian I, Der Weiß Kunig purports to provide a chronicle of the life of the Emperor. Der Weiß Kunig was written by Marx Treitzsaurwein following suggestions and dictation provided directly by Emperor Maximilian I. The allegorical styling of the Emperor as The White King arose from a variety of sources, including the clear symbolic correlations between 'white' and 'wisdom' and the traditional white harness Emperor Maximilian I carried in tournaments and battles. Other rulers are also represented allegorically throughout Der Weiß Kunig, including the King of France (The Blue King), the Duke of Milan (The King of the Worm - a reference drawn from the Milanese coat of arms), and the King of Hungary (The Green King). The allegorical tale is told in three parts: the first deals with previous Habsburg rulers; the second with the birth and early life of Maximilian (through to his marriage to Maria von Burgund); and the third with the rule of Emperor Maximilian I. For the first two elements, Treitzsaurwein drew on a variety of historical sources, but for the third, relied upon direct comment from the Emperor. The third portion of Der Weiß Kunig, therefore, has value as a source document for the era. The woodblocks used in Der Weiß Kunig were carved in the first two decades of the 16th Century, but were not published prior to the Emperor's death. In 1665, the manuscript was rediscovered in Schloss Ambras and a century later, the woodcuts were rediscovered in Graz. Kurzböck's famous publication of the text and woodcuts followed in 1775 - after more than 200 years of the whole work being thought lost.Despite the propagandist intent and the somewhat romanticised imagery within Der Weiß Kunig, the illustrations provide a valuable and intriguing insight into late-Medieval and early-Renaissance Court life and the costumes, housewares, weaponry and architecture of the period. The jackets have a few small tears, otherwise a fine set. [ heavy volumes ].

John Baptist Jackson (1701-1754) trained as a wood engraver before traveling to Paris and, finally, to Venice where he became proficient in the chiaroscuro woodcut technique printed in several colours. He is noted chiefly for his major work comprising 24 chiaroscuro woodcuts after paintings by Venetian masters made from 1739 to 1743 and published in Venice in a bound volume in 1745, now considered one of the greatest examples of 18th-century print-making. When Jackson returned to London in 1745 he stopped producing his woodcuts and instead began to work in textile and wallpaper patterning. These efforts did not succeed and he issued a book in 1754 entitled An Essay on the Invention of Engraving and Printing in Chiaro Oscuro, but did not produce any further work .
