Original full blue leather binding, titles to spine gilt, bell design in gilt to front board, twin rules to boards, raised bands ruled in gilt, inner dentelles gilt, all edges gilt, and a silk page marker, marbled endpapers. Housed in the original marbled paper slipcase with a circular blue morocco inlay featuring a bell design in gilt on the front cover. 115 pp. First enlarged edition of this long, autobiographical poem published in a limited edition of only 100 copies. The book was published by Murray in 1960, with drawings by Michael Tree all hand-painted, and again in 1976 in an enlarged edition , adding the text of "Cricket Master / (An Incident)" on pages 111-115 and a portrait of the poet by Derek Hill and a facsimile page of the draft typescript with invited comments by Tom Driberg, John Sparrow and John Murray with the author's replies, Paradine produced this deluxe issue in 1977 and had the 100 copies specially bound on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, limiting the edition to 100 copies, each numbered and signed by Betjeman, and with all of Tree's drawings hand-coloured . a fine copy.
